UW Whitewater (Education 1-9)
I am a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Whitewater with a degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Sociology. This is my tenth year teaching. I have been teaching in the Greater Milwaukee area during the school year and various districts during the summer. Through this experience, I have worked with many different learning styles and students with many different challenges, in addition, I have also worked with Reading and Math Intervention students. I have found that students are very successful when working on a one-on-one basis when you find something that interests them. I have a passion for teaching and a desire for student success.
A bit about my teaching experience: I have taught first, third, fourth, fifth, and eighth grades with a typical class size of around 25 students. I found that early reading and math success builds a strong foundation for future learning. I have many assessments that I can use to curtail your student learning.
Through tutoring, I have worked with students in all subject areas and in all grades Kindergarten through Ninth Grade.

Melissa does an excellent job tutoring my son in reading. She works on decoding and reading for understanding. She is extremely positive, she really helps to build his self-esteem and encourages him to try his hardest.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked with students that are diagnosed as ADD/ADHD and I have found that working closely with them works well. Other strategies, would be frequent changes in activity, hands-on learning materials, and technology components. I have also been trained in PBIS strategies and RTI strategies.
