UWM, Milwaukee (Secondary Education,)
I'm a mature adult who has gathered a tremendous amount of experience teaching, coaching and mentoring students for 27 years. I taught in public schools, both middle school and high school for 26 years, and last year worked with juvenile felons in a therapeutic school, honing their language skills and character development. I have my bachelor's degree in secondary English and my master's degree in educational psychology. I have a license in English in the state of Wisconsin, grades 7-12, and a guidance counseling license. I have used both areas of expertise in my teaching and coaching capacities. I also have spent much time in theatre since my early emphasis focused on theatre arts. I've directed numerous plays and performed in various theatre venues, still singing with a praise band at my church.
Beyond teaching, performing, and directing, my strength is inspiring students to become what is only imagined. I have former students thank me for my positive influence in their lives. It never fails that I connect with someone who benefited from knowing me and being part of my classroom experience. I'm humbled by the enduring influence of a worthy teacher. I never imagined that I could bless others' lives so richly, as teaching has been a wonderful ministerial tool in helping students define quality and purpose in their own lives. That's probably more significant than some of the inroads I made teaching English (which I love!) to thousands of wonderful kids and young adults. Addressing the whole student is needed to ensure motivation and true learning. I always positively "confront" each child, understanding the need for acceptance, but expecting progress to occur. In tutoring especially, real learning needs to happen or money is certainly wasted. I spent many hours with my older son since he had a learning disability. I understood that we don't all learn the same way; my personal experience helped prepare me for the multitude of learning styles and the economic/social variables that impact student achievement. I was especially successful with the at-risk student who didn't make school a priority. In essence, my guidance counseling degree prepared me for individual differences within the classroom. I stayed in the classroom because I realized the greater influence I had with students.
I'm hoping to have the opportunity of working with you or your student. Teaching is gratifying and tutoring is even more so. I'm a strong language arts/ English teacher, with an emphasis in communication. I have excellent interpersonal skills as well as an empathetic nature. I can help you or your student realize the power of language/literature and good communication skills. Language is an essential tool in our world today.
Thank you for your consideration.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught English/language art for 27 years in the public sector, both in middle school, high school, and a therapeutic school for felons. Public speaking has always been included in the curriculum. We'd focus on demonstration speeches, informative, and persuasive, developing a coherent plan for each of these types. I also directed the fall plays at a High School. My strength is in public speaking since I worked in forensics as well, as both coach and judge of tournaments.
