I am a licensed math and science teacher, and have experience with students with special needs, especially ADHD and dyslexia. I have worked with sixth grade through adult. I currently do math intervention with a local school district.
My objective with most students is to make them self-reliant learners, and gain the confidence they need to be successful in college and beyond. I adapt my approach to the individual student's learning style, and expect my students to prepare for our sessions.
I have helped many young people prepare for their ACT, SAT and GMAT tests, and provide guidance to help them make the most of their time when preparing for the test. I consider myself more of the coach, but the students really need to do the "heavy lifting" in order to achieve their goals. Jennifer helped my daughter catch up on homework and showed her how to get more information to complete an assignment when there wasn't enough given to complete assignments.
Thank you Jennifer.
The girls have really benefited from meeting with Jennifer to prep for the ACT -- she has been a great resource and the experience is so much more personalized for their needs. I would recommend Jennifer - and if we ever have a need again will certainly request her!
Having all this help before ACT test was great. Jennifer was very helpful with materials as well as test taking strategy. Strongly recommend her.
Very thorough and consistently completed what needed to be accomplished. Such a pleasure to work with, but the best part was the success we saw with our child. Built confidence and now doesn't dislike and of her subjects. Thank you.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I use very targeted instruction with my students. Using a full diagnostic ACT test, we carefully select specific content to master. If we need to refresh plane geometry, but algebra is relatively strong, we really hone in on the geometry, especially because we know that there will be 14 questions out of 60 on plane geometry on the test!
We also discuss testing strategies. The ACT test is one of the most consistent tests ever designed, and understanding how the test is constructed and how to "read between the lines" can be quite valuable, especially if your student is not a good test taker.
I maintain an online library of materials that are available to my students at no charge. Students who are motivated to work on their own should not be penalized. It saves time, and can save you money.
I completed all sections of the Praxis 1 test, with a perfect score in math, near-perfect in reading, and earned a 5.5 of a possible 6 on the writing portion.
I have also taken two of the Praxis 2 tests, math and general science. I scored in the top 10% in science, earning me a Certificate of Excellence from ETS.
As a teacher of middle and high school students, I am quite aware of the need for students to develop organizational skills and habits that will benefit them now and into future careers. Many of my students have special needs, including ADHD and dyslexia. There are many physical changes that we can make with our students to encourage better compliance with the need to complete work and perform at their best, and positive behavioral to provide reinforcement of good choices. Each child is unique, and needs to learn to manage his or her own learning in context.
