About Beth

I have always enjoyed teaching. My teacher for first through third grades noticed my ability and desire to teach. She had me give a presentation to kindergarteners, teach my classmates how to draw a tree with many branches, and tutor a struggling classmate. It's not surprising that I went on to become a teacher.

I graduated form UW-Stevens Point with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education, a middle school emphasis, and a math minor. I have 5 1/2 years of teaching experience in the classroom as a high school math teacher and middle school science, English, and reading teacher. I quit to raise a family, and we moved to the Coleman area so my husband could farm near family. Now six children later, I am interested in getting back into teaching.

I empathize with struggling students because I used to be one. I was last in my class to learn to read. I hated being called on, but when It finally "clicked," I volunteered to read. I was soon moved up to a higher reading group, but I struggled with reading comprehension which affected comprehension of word problems in math class. My mother read through word problems and set up the equation. Then I would solve the equation. Thanks to my mother and effort on my part, my skills improved tremendously to the point that I truly understood lessons, no longer needed help, actually enjoyed word problems, and was able to tutor my classmates. A student who sat behind me in algebra thanked me saying that if it hadn't been for me, he would have surely failed algebra. He could not understand the teacher, but he understood how I explained each concept.

I keep in mind that all children are different and learn in different ways. I am patient, easy-going, and try different approaches to aid learning. I don't give away answers; I help students figure out how to get the correct answer. Give me a chance to help you overcome your struggles and love math like I do!

I am happy to meet you either at your home, the library, or another place that will facilitate learning. Feel free to contact me with any questions. My policy is at least eight hours of advance notice so I can make adjustments to my day's schedule. We can find a time to reschedule if you wish.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
