About Damien

I have worked as a math tutor at UW Stout for the past 3.5 years, and I tutored a wide variety of subjects. These included college algebra, precalculus, single- and multi-variable calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, probability, statistics, discrete math, and even Java, Verilog, C/C++, and Assembly programming. I have been told by numerous clients that I have a unique gift for clearing up difficult concepts, making math simple and easy.

Also, I am the oldest of 7 in a homeschool family. This means that I spent my growing-up years helping to teach younger siblings--which I still do today. Thus, working one-on-one with a student comes very naturally to me.

I can honestly say that I've never had a bad day at work in the math lab. It's been my favorite job ever. I love math, and find great satisfaction when "the light comes on" in my student's mind. My greatest satisfaction is when the student begins to share my appreciation for the beauty, simplicity, and utility of mathematics.

I am a fairly experienced math tutor, mainly in the high school and college levels. When explaining a concept, I am capable of approaching the problem from several different angles according to the individual needs or learning style of the student. Finally, I'm not a nerd; I can frame complicated and technical language in the vernacular of "normal people."

I have less experience tutoring computer programming, but I feel comfortable tutoring at the high school or introductory college level. I have taken courses in Java, C/C++, Assembly, and Verilog, including embedded applications (robotics and such). My work lately has me very experienced in C and Linux, with sufficient exposure to Verilog.

Thank you for looking at my profile! If you think I might be a good fit for your needs, please don't hesitate to drop me a line. I will try my best to respond within 24 hours.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Computer Programming

I recently received my degree in Computer Engineering. I have (informally) tutored friends and classmates throughout my education. I received A's in all of my programming classes. And I have worked as a programmer for the University of Wisconsin and for Marshfield Clinic Information Services.

Differential Equations

I earned an A in Differential Equations when I took it in college. I helped many of my classmates understand the concepts and study for exams/quizzes. I tutored the subject occasionally for 3 years. I also used materials from this subject in some of my engineering classes in later semesters.

Damien was helpful in helping to understand details of my verilog project. I appreciated his tutoring style. He didn't just show me everything but led me to see the needed steps by suggestions and providing different ways to consider details.
