In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I learned basic sewing techniques starting at age 6, and I know several different kinds of stitches, including types for mending, buttons, zippers, alterations, and tailoring. Because of my work with them, I have had to pick up quickly on study methods and skills according to different personality types, and how to apply them. Throughout high school and college I was responsible for my own grade point average and found it necessary to try several different methods in order to accomplish schoolwork. I also tutored a younger student for several weeks and helped him understand how he could study better through multiple avenues.
I have had two years of acting lessons and a polished background in musical theater literature, including instruction in operatic singing. I also took one college class in theatrical literature and one in the works of Shakespeare. I am familiar with many different types of drama and theater, as well as having a working knowledge of both classic and modern plays.
I have taken five years of violin lessons. I have studied both classical and fiddle or country techniques, and I spent two years playing in orchestras. I volunteered to tutor a sibling in violin, and she has since learned to play basic tunes with good fingering and a proper bow hold.
