About Elsie

Hello! Would you like your child to be learning not only the subject they're studying, but a better way to study every subject? That's my job. I am 20 years old, possess a bachelor's degree from George Fox University, and have several years' prior tutoring experience, both volunteer and paid.
I am an expert in the English language, intermediate in French, and a beginner in Spanish, German, Italian, and Portuguese.
I am proficient in music theory and play the violin and piano, as well as being classically trained vocally.
While I am not particularly fond of mathematics and science, I have studied methods of learning for ten years, and I can find a way for your child to gain confidence and motivation so that they can pass their classes.
I am available on weekdays in the Portland area and am closest to Wilsonville, Tualatin, Canby, and Newberg. Interested? Contact me. Thanks!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have been studying the Bible both independently and in group settings for 13 years. I can knowledgeably discuss various theological beliefs, both literal and metaphorical readings of the text, and spiritual or cultural influences. I also have a background in Biblical history.

Cooking

My major at George Fox University was Foods and Nutrition in Business. I am proficient in knife skills, various cooking techniques, and general food knowledge as well as safety and sanitation practices. I have studied classical French cooking. Food history, nutrition profiles, and basic chemistry make up a thorough education on the subject.

Drawing

I took three years of drawing lessons from a licensed art teacher. I know some basic art history and beginning to intermediate drawing techniques. I have worked with several mediums, including pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, oil pastels, and hard pastels.

Ear Training

My three years of professional group voice lessons and four years of choir have trained my ear in music and I have been determined to be consistent in correct pitch and tone. I helped lead group vocal practices and train 10 people to hear and match correct pitches. I received high marks in these classes for both learning and teaching sufficient ear training.

General Music

I have had at least ten years of combined musical experience in direct contact with an instrument. Without fail, I have received high marks for effort, practice, and proficiency in all of my previous classes related to music, including instrumental or voice lessons, choir, and orchestra. I was also graded well in any classes on musical history and theory. I have a wonderful grasp of general musical knowledge in many areas.

Needlework

I have no professional experience in this area, but I have done personal needlework several times. I am familiar with many different types of stitches, including cross stitch, backstitch, and French knots. I own embroidery needles and thread and work on needlework projects in my personal time.

Nutrition

My major at George Fox University was Foods and Nutrition in Business. I studied nutrition and health throughout the life cycle, including for nursing mothers, children, and the elderly. I have written numerous essays on food nutritional profiles. I keep updated on current knowledge about nutrition as much as possible, including information from Michael Pollan and some other leading food and nutrition experts. I have previously prepared nutritional, balanced meals for anywhere from 1-20 people.

SAT Reading

I score consistently in the 98th percentile for proficiency in reading comprehension, vocabulary, and spelling. I won second and first place, respectively, in the Clackamas Regional Skills Competition Spelling Bee.I am a member of the Sigma Tau Delta National English Honors Society, and admitted solely on merit of excellence in the English language.

Sewing

I learned basic sewing techniques starting at age 6, and I know several different kinds of stitches, including types for mending, buttons, zippers, alterations, and tailoring. I can use a sewing machine proficiently or work by hand. I have previously made projects such as historically correct period dresses and other clothing of the Civil War era.

Sight Singing

Thanks to at least ten years of lessons in vocal training, violin, or piano, I have learned to sight-read music very well. Within my choir and vocal lesson experience, sight-singing was necessary to succeed in the classes. I have been told by professional music teachers that I sight-sing well, and have passed on knowledge on how to sight-sing properly to other vocal students.

Special Needs

My youngest sister has Down's Syndrome. She has learned to communicate through sign language (ASL). I have basic ASL skills because of this. I have been helping take care of her and working with physical and speech therapists on her behalf for seven years.

Spelling

Took second place and first place, respectively, in the Clackamas Regional Skills Competition Spelling Bee, winning the equivalent of free tuition for 20 community college credits.

Passed college-level spelling tests at the age of 12.

Was reading proficiently by the age of 4, scoring very high on standardized tests in the subject of reading comprehension.

Have a working knowledge of elementary mathematics up to algebra.

Study Skills

I have eight siblings and six of them are younger. All were homeschooled. Because of my work with them, I have had to pick up quickly on study methods and skills according to different personality types, and how to apply them. Throughout high school and college I was responsible for my own grade point average and found it necessary to try several different methods in order to accomplish schoolwork. I also tutored a younger student for several weeks and helped him understand how he could study better through multiple avenues.

Theatre

I have had two years of acting lessons and a polished background in musical theater literature, including instruction in operatic singing. I also took one college class in theatrical literature and one in the works of Shakespeare. I am familiar with many different types of drama and theater, as well as having a working knowledge of both classic and modern plays.

Violin

I have taken five years of violin lessons. I have studied both classical and fiddle or country techniques, and I spent two years playing in orchestras. I volunteered to tutor a sibling in violin, and she has since learned to play basic tunes with good fingering and a proper bow hold.

Voice (Music)

I have been classically trained in proper vocal techniques, as well as given instruction for singing in a choir, for opera, and for musical theater. I took three years of professional group voice lessons and I have four years of choir experience. My music theory, ability to read music, and sight-singing proficiency add to my abilities in this area.

Writing

The officials who moderate high school tests asked to use one of my writing samples as an example of how future students should write. I received high marks on 95% of the essays and papers I turned in, both in high school and in college. My editing and proofreading skills are at a professional level and I practice them daily by reading and critiquing various works of writing.
