About Macie

I like to help people, especially those who struggle with reading and writing. Professionally, I have been an editor and legal writer. Personally, I am life-long lover of literature and enjoy reading. Many of my friends are non-native English speakers, and I have helped them learn skills and techniques to read, write and speak the English language more effectively. While I do not have a teaching certificate nor professionally taught students, I supervised, trained and mentored college interns to write effective articles for publication at a non-profit criminal justice organization (when I was living and working in Washington DC). I constantly encourage my nephews and friends' children (ages 4 to 17) to expand their vocabulary and spelling simply by making games out of words in everyday conversation. I like to make learning fun and I enjoy the silliness of working with children of all different ages. With college age and beyond, I can tailor my approach and adjust to each person. The best part of teaching someone is that it is both fun and educational, and it is an enriching experience for a tutor. I like to say that I learn more from people I help than the reverse.

I have a B.A in Philosophy, a M.S. in Criminal Justice and a J.D. In college, graduate school and later on in law school, I worked as an editor/writer for three different types of publications - a student of color journal in college; a collection of graduate studies work; and also a school legal magazine. I also worked professionally as a legal writer/editor for Lexis/Nexis and am currently a book reviewer for a crowdsource publishing company called Double Bridge Publishing.

I was born and raised in Yakima. I am returning to my hometown to be with my family and am rediscovering Yakima all over again. I am patient, understanding and a whole lot of fun. I think that students and professionals will enjoy working with me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Criminal Justice

I have a M.S. in Justice, Law & Criminology. My concentration was Justice and Public Policy which provided theoretical grounding in criminology and criminal justice for advanced research and practice in fields like corrections and policing. Sample coursework included The Constitution & Criminal Procedure; Law, Deviance & the Mental Health System; Victimology; and Race & Justice in America. In the late 1990s I was a pre-trial services officer with the DC Superior Court in Washington DC and later worked at the National Criminal Justice Association as an editor/publications manager for the association's monthly and quarterly publications.
