About Howard

I have a Bachelor Degree with Honors in English literature, with a minor in French. I later attended graduate school. My undergraduate degree is from the University of Puget Sound in 1982 and my graduate education from Fuller Seminary. After college I developed an interest in math and chemistry, and had a level of math classes from Yakima Valley Community College. I have also had STEM classes from Berkeley and MIT, with the Berkeley Class Miller's "Physics for Future Presidents" and the MIT class Strang's famous Calculus Class. To prepare myself of math tutoring I took the Compass Math Test for Washington State in 2014, and received a 99 score on algebra and 86 on college algebra. I also worked at the Yakima School District tutoring third-fifth graders in reading and math skills in the 1998-99 school year. I have tutored high school, college and elementary kids in phonics, languages, chemistry and math since the 1980s. I have also tutored Latin and New Testament Greek, have worked as an interpreter for the Yakima County Auditor, and was hired as a medical interpreter.
I am a published writer in comedy and science fiction in "Nova Science Fiction Magazine", as well as publication in Yakima newspapers like "The Yakima Business Report." I am currently working on two novels, one with a science fiction theme, and the other a historical romance. I attend Highland Community Church and am an active supporter of Highland High School sports. I have worked in the children's ministry in my church and have been a member of the Tieton Volunteer Fire Department and Theta Chi Fraternity. My educational credits include one quarter towards certification endorsement in English, and I have 10 years tutoring experience if you include my volunteer helping my fellow college students. My family has lived in the Yakima Valley for 80 years, and I am familiar with almost all aspects of Yakima culture. I am fluent in conversational Spanish, so I can communicate with our Hispanic community as well.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.


I have tutored accounting one year. I have also had private lessons in accounting from a CPA. I graduated from a university that had a strong business program, where I learned about basic accounting concepts, even though my degree was in a different major.

Algebra 1

I got a 100% on the WyzAnt Algebra I qualifying test, and have had four or five algebra one students in the past year and a half.

Algebra 2

I have tutored students in the Algebra 2 level for two or three years. I tested at 86 in College Algebra on the COMPASS test for Washington State September 2014. I was also signed on by a community college professor to tutor Math 104, which is basically algebra 2.


I took the med term class at the local college, which includes anatomy, and passed with an A.


I have spent years studying calculus. I have also tested into calculus on the YVCC Compass Test the first time I took it. I have also used calculus in my algebra and pre-calculus tutoring as a future reference.

Elementary (K-6th)

After my BA in English--which included some useful training language arts, I began teacher certification at Central Washington University at ca 10 credits, including lesson plans and learning styles, such as visual, kinetic, etc. In the 1998-99 School Year I worked in VISTA program--the Washington Reading Corps at Martin Luther King Elementary(3d, 4th and 5th), where I also worked in math. I have worked with private students as a math tutor--a 6th grader. I applied as an emergency substitute at Selah School District and fulfilled the basic paper qualifications. I have also worked w/ an "age 12" student in my family, tutoring math and Spanish. I have also volunteered with my church in 3-7 grade Sunday school.


I have an Honors Degree in English from The University of Puget Sound. I have also worked as an English Tutor for the Yakima Valley Community College Tutoring Center and at the YVCC Writing Center.
I have also worked as a Reading Tutor in the VISTA Program in the Yakima School District, and have worked as a private English and writing tutor for seven years.
I am a published writer, poetry, fiction, and journalism, for NOVA Science Fiction Magazine, and The Yakima Business Report, as well as being an online movie reviewer.
I have submitted, but was rejected for, a screenplay for Paramount Pictures.


I have worked with English as a Second Language students for years in elementary through adult education settings. I am fluent in Spanish. I am also familiar and cognizant of Hispanic culture, as I live in a small agricultural town and have worked in agriculture. I also attended a Latino congregation at my former church.


I have a minor from the University of Puget Sound in French. I have tutored French at High School level. I was certified at Yakima Valley Community College as a French tutor.


I have two years tutoring geometry with private students. I also have volunteer geometry tutoring at Yakima Valley Community College. In addition, I have worked in the construction field and can give practical examples of the discipline.


I have two years of college German, with a 4.00 average. I was certified to tutor German at Yakima Valley Community College where I worked with students. I also attended a German language church and like to read classic poetry and novels in German.


I have an honors BA in English. I have taken advanced grammar as one of the pre-requisites. I have also worked as an editor.


I have worked since the 1980s tutoring phonics, and I have also helped homeschoolers w/ English and literary theory. In 2014 I left my business card for my private non-Wyzant tutoring w/ Learning Connection, the networking site for homeschoolers in Yakima Washington, and was referred to a student. I also know many educational materials which can relate to homeschooling, as my best friend in Yakima worked at School House Fun, an education-related store. I also worked at an elementary school and attend a Bible believing church in my town. Many homeschoolers are evangelical Christians.


I am of Italian heritage and have learned some Italian through my family. I am also fluent in Spanish and can see the connections to help Spanish speakers to learn "l'Italiano". I have read Dante, Petrarch and Machiavelli in the original and have some knowledge of Italian literature. It would be an honor to share that with others.


I have had two years of college Latin. I have tutored privately, going through 30 chapters of Wheelock with one student. I have also begun to create a Latin club at two high schools.


I have an honors degree in English literature, and worked on the literary magazine in college. I tutored lit at Yakima Valley Community College for five years, helping students write essays on classic stories. I scored in the 89th percentile in the English portion of the Graduate Record Exam, was voted a scholarship by the English Department of my university.


I received an "A" in Physics my senior year in college. The professor used to brag that he "was descended from Einstein" in that his grad advisor had received the honor of having Einstein as HIS grad advisor. I also took--for noncredit online--the famous "Physics for Future Presidents" from Dr. Miller at UC Berkeley. I have knowledge of physics concepts from trigonometry and chemistry as well.


I have tutored pre-algebra students, from the fifth grade on, and have tutored several students for the GED Math. I scored a 99 on the COMPASS Algebra Test for Washington State in 2014. I worked in the Yakima School District, in the 1998-99 year, where I volunteered at Martin Luther King Elementary School in pre-algebra. I also help teach math ideas at my church on a volunteer basis.


I have tutoring pre-calculus. I have also taken online sessions in pre-calc, calc,, and linear algebra. I have spent time learning teaching methods and approaches higher level algebra.


I worked for a school year 1998-1999 for the Washington State Reading Corps ( a VISTA program) at Martin Luther King Elementary School in Yakima, Washington. This has given me experience in reading "tricks" such as verbal clues and out-loud teaching techniques. I also gained experience and knowledge of children's literature.

SAT Math

I received the highest score in my high school class for the SAT equivalent, according to my principal. I have helped volunteer, working a bit with an SAT student. I have also tutored SAT level math for six years.

SAT Reading

I have tutored literature and reading comprehension at Yakima Valley Community College. I have also had private English and literature students. In addition, I have edited the manuscript of an autobiography.

SAT Writing

I have worked as a writing tutor at Yakima Valley Community College, in the Writing Center. I worked years 1982-86; 1992; 2000. I have published in Yakima Valley Senior Times, and I edited a memoir. I have published two short stories and also narrative comedy.


I passed the oral Spanish section of the Yakima School District bilingual test. I was certified to work for Yakima County Auditor as an Election Interpreter. I have tutored Spanish for medical, business, and social service personnel for several years, and was a "Spanish-speaking associate" at my job. I use Spanish almost daily, as I live in a largely Hispanic town.

Study Skills

I have a psychology class from Yakima Valley Community College that taught study skills via the SQ3R system: Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review. I have also tutoring SAT Prep in Critical Reading for wyzant. I have worked at the Yakima Valley Tutoring Center as a chemistry, and general social science tutor, for which I helped test prep. I had a student thank me for raising her grade from a D to a B.


I tutored trigonometry students two years. I received a perfect grade in my last trigonometry class. I tutored AP trigonometry for my next-to-last student.


I have an honors BA in English and graduate school in a language based subject, which includes vocabulary.
