No matter what field students pursue, study skills, reading comprehension, and writing proficiency are critical. I've taught Junior High and High School for one of Washington's largest school districts, and also taught at Bellevue College, North Seattle Community College, Renton Technical College, and ESL students, as well as private tutoring. I have experience with a variety of ages, including adults. I focus on the skills, but do so in a gentle and easy-going way that lets everyone be comfortable.
The basic communication skills are essential at all levels of education. For those who need help, I can provide knowledge and support, as well as resources for ongoing support in the quest for better reading and writing skills. Whether you need assistance with passing English, or guidance composing a college application essay, I can help and help you at your own pace. Patient and kind, Heather was able to get me up to speed very quickly on the little tricks of sewing that I had never heard. VERY knowledgeable! A+ !
Heather helped my high-school-age daughter with the coursework for an independent study course that required a lot of writing. Writing is difficult for my literal-minded daughter. She tends to overthink writing prompts and gets stuck in the first draft stage. Heather was a great writing coach for her and helped her craft responses that were to the point without getting bogged down in "what ifs."
I would recommend Heather for students with schoolwork involving writing skills (for example, English, History, Government/Civics, or Literature classes). She really knows how to help.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I specialize in traditional cooking and historical food arts, particularly cheese making, which I have taught for King County programs, and old-fashioned soup making, and cooking and crafting with herbs.
As a practical matter, I worked for the King County, WA probation dept. for several years, interviewing, assessing, and writing recommendations based upon state statutes and administrative law for sentencing for misdemeanants. Academically, I had courses in criminal justice programs and procedures when I was getting my masters degree, and am a member of Association of Family and Conciliatory Courts, and organization for educating family courts and ancillary court personnel. In addition, I have specialized training in family courts and child custody provided by the King County, WA Bar Assn.
I have worked in public school systems as an elementary school teacher, grades k through 6. Working with this age group can be quite fun, as most are eager to learn and respond well to learning games and activities. My experience covers the usual elementary teaching, from early math, reading and comprehension, and beginning history, to music and art.
English is so important to all school success. Whether it is writing, reading, interpreting, or relating to other subjects, the study skills, organizational thinking and even the structure of sentences can be important to all other subjects. I love English and I love helping someone understand it better. I can provide references.
I've been doing needlework and hand arts for many years. In addition to basic hand and machine sewing, I've also drafted patterns and made alterations in ready-to-wear, and done extensive quilting. I spin my own yarn, too. The decorative needle arts also are part of my daily life. Needlepoint, bargello, embroidery, crewel work, cross stitch, bobbin lace making, tatting, needle lace, and trapunto round out my needlework experience. I love to teach what I know.
Public speaking can be a fun, positive experience when you know your topic and feel comfortable. I have been a public speaker and trainer for more than ten years, and even wrote a book on some tricks of the trade to make new speakers more confident. I have been a featured speaker before local police departments, service clubs, community groups and classrooms. Students who have worked with me have developed an ease of presentation and gone on to become commanding public speakers on their own.
Reading means so much more than just seeing words on a page. Word choices, understanding how words are developed, knowing what punctuation means, are all part of the reading process, and will help with comprehension. In addition, there are skills and hints that can help students understand what they read and grasp the meanings easier. I've worked with elementary students up to business executives with reading skills and comprehension, and enjoy it tremendously.
I started sewing when I was a child, took classes in sewing and even got some blue ribbons at the state fair. My expertise is in utilitarian sewing - repairs, alterations, costumes, - clothing construction and even some couture sewing and tailoring. I love sewing and handwork including quilting and needle arts.
I've taught study skills to students from junior high level all the way to business executives. Success involves the ability to prioritize, recognize the most important parts to learn, set achievable goals, and frequent review. With organization and some basic skills, anyone can improve the results of their study.
There are different ways of writing - essays, research papers, journal, news, academic. Each requires a different perspective and way of writing. I have personal experience with all these forms of writing, and I've taught writing skills to students from elementary school through adult business executives.
