My passion is helping children and youth feel better about themselves through having success in their educational and athletic endeavors as they mature. My main occupation has been business for my adult life, but I have enjoyed teaching children and youth in church environments and coaching soccer ages 6-19. I have tutored, mainly math, at the junior high through college levels.
My education was at Stanford University and Humboldt State University in California as an undergraduate, graduating with a BS in Chemistry. I did post graduate work at Cornell University in Chemistry and University of Southern California in Business.
I work now part-time in Financial Services but really want to be involved in helping young people succeed in education. I relate well to children and youth through college age and am patient, but determined in tutoring. James has been a great help for my son and we appreciate how willing he was to work with our schedule and priorities. Our son feels more confident in his test taking abilities thanks to James. He is a great tutor! Very patient and encouraging.
James is a great tutor. My grandson is hard to connect with but James manages to reach him. My grandson has ability but lacks motivation and James is working on getting through to him. I am very grateful for his hard work on this problem.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I had my first tutoring job (Geometry) when I was a Senior in High School. I enjoy math and have done well in classes through Differential Equations. I've had a business career but have been tutoring in the last ten years, mainly Math and Accounting and QuickBooks. I have a good grasp of Algebra II and am able to teach concepts with patience.
I studied Accounting in an MBA Program and worked in an accounting department in many positions over the years. I use QuickBooks Premier in my on business and am proficient and comfortable with it. I brought a client up and running in her retail business on QuickBooks Premier. Also, I am the Treasurer at a local church and upgraded them from QuickBooks Pro to QuickBooks Non-profit, in the process transferring all their data and setting up a new and more detailed chart of accounts.
I've coached youth soccer for 20 years, first for my daughters as they were growing up and then for other teams of players up to age 19. I was elected as All-Star coach or tournament coach for many of those years. I've studied books, videos and learned from coaching clinics. I've also played in casual games of soccer and played with my teams in practice. The teams that I coached were usually very successful and one year we placed 1st in our U-14 age category in Southern California for American Youth Soccer Association.
I learned to study well in high school and then in college. I realized I had to set aside blocks of time to devote to homework and that reading through the materials just once wasn't going to be enough. My work experience in business taught me the value of persistence in working through problems. Often I had to come back to a problem the following morning with a fresh mind. I believe I can impart the thoughts and skills to students in tutoring. I have tutored, mainly math, at the junior high through college levels. My education was at Stanford University and Humboldt State University in California as an undergraduate, graduating with a BS in Chemistry. I did post graduate work at Cornell University in Chemistry and University of Southern California in Business.
