About Timothy

I have a B.A. in English from Warner Pacific College, a small private christian school in SE Portland. During college professors requested that I assist struggling students in multiple subjects, especially in literature. I was the photo-editor and editor-in-chief of the college art and literature magazine and newsmagazine, respectively.

I have done full-time work as a real-estate photographer, and part time work as a photo and print journalist in the Oregon National Guard. My writing and photography have been published by the Department of Defense, the Military Times, the Army Times, as well as other big defense websites and local newspapers. I have had a poem published for a state-wide poetry competition.

I am constantly dedicated to ensure that both my own writing and other's writing is grammatically correct, makes a sweet and simple point, and most of all expresses the desires of the writer! In college I was the go-to-guy for getting your paper ready to turn in, and even now I have students getting Masters degrees and asking for me to look over their paper. I am working on a novel as a side hobby, and make a point to write every morning even if I don't feel like it! Write! Write! Write!

I was a photography teacher's aid at a high school in North Portland, and with photography being the other 50% of what I do when I am not writing I know all systems, from Canon to Nikon. I work with Lightroom and Photoshop, keep a stock photography profile regularly updated and have a photography portfolio that influences both the Generals of our armies and the flood of people who want to buy a house!

I have a very open schedule and can tutor any day but Sunday. I am available from as early as 7am (when I have finished my own writing for the morning) and can tutor as late as you're willing to stay up (which, if you are in college is past midnight!)

I am a husband and father of two, and have worked with kids of all ages in multiple organizations such as Skate Church PDX. When I am not tutoring I am doing real-estate photography, writing, or playing with my two daughters.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I was a leader at my high school's christian youth group, taking extra curricular bible study courses to define a christian leader. I went to a private christian college where I voluntarily took classes on the teachings of both Jesus and Paul. I maintain church membership, attend bible studies, and read scripture every day.

Chess

I was on my school's chess club. I play chess both physically and on Chess.com. I have an outstanding statistical performance at Chess. It is also a good game to develop social and strategic skills.

College Counseling

I helped freshman in college decide on a career and college path when I attended college. I was a leader in many roles, including college publications. In the military I have guided soldiers into using federal tuition assistance and applying for the GI Bill. I have also had experience with ROTC and can get both high school and college students up to date on how to budget and prepare mentally for college.

Fitness

As a graduate of the US Army's Basic Combat Training and their 16 week medical course I was awarded the Army Combat Fitness Badge for maximizing my fitness score. I ran both High School and Collegiate Cross Country. I continue to serve in the Military and maintain an understanding of nutrition and fitness to keep oneself in peak physical condition.

Handwriting

I am able to teach both cursive and traditional writing. I will use both practice sheets and ask the student to copy out of texts. I graduated from college with an English degree. When I was younger I used to write entire novels hand written, and only reverted to typing recently.

Macintosh

I own one macbook pro and have another provided by the military, and use them for both work and pleasure. For the military and work I use them to edit photos and write. I am highly proficient at everything from Lightroom and Photoshop to a basic understanding of the computer system.

Painting

I have taken an art class at Reed college. I paint in acrylics and water color. I can do a basic art history lesson, as well as teach multiple styles of painting. I also teach proper use of equipment and a proper use of imagination.

Photography

I have been a professional real estate photographer for the past year. I am also in the National Guard as a print and photo journalist. In college I was the photo editor of the art and literature magazine, and the photo editor of the college newsmagazine.

Religion

I use a curriculum where each religion is studied using several text books trusted by scholars, alongside the main texts for each major religion. As a student you will get a vaster respect for the spiritual and ceremonial practices surrounding each religion by using an objective viewpoint, taking note in a personal reflections journal, and viewing the world religions through both a current events and historical lens. There will also be opportunity for onsite religious visits in the Portland/Vancouver area.

Study Skills

I worked as a librarian in college and became oriented with the vast amount of information a student has at their fingertips. Whether it be from online databases, books, to sifting through academic articles I have the collegiate level of knowledge to help your student sift through the world of information.

Through my experience studying for tests and maintaining a 3.5 GPA in college, to my time in the military as a medic and a public affairs specialist, I will also instill the necessary discipline, time management and personal integrity it takes to have a good attention span and thirst for knowledge.

Track & Field

Both Track and Cross Country have been a huge part of my life. I ran in college, and went on to join the military and became confident in my leadership and instructing skills. I focus on mid to long distance running, especially in areas of technique and improving your running PRs.
