About Julia

I recently graduated from Pomona College with a BA in molecular biology. While in high school I volunteered over 300 hours of 1:1 tutoring and worked in private homes tutoring high school math, English, and science. Then at college I became a TA for physics and continued tutoring in private homes over the summer. I enjoy working with middle school, high school, and college students of all ages.

To be a good tutor, I think it is important to make learning fun and engaging. I believe that a good teacher uses multiple explanations for a single concept so that it is clearly understood. I enjoy many subjects and I hope to spread that joy through tutoring.

Math is one of my favorite subjects to tutor because it is a subject many students struggle with. My approach is to review what the students knows and asses any gaps in knowledge or differences between ability and classroom expectations. Then I teach material, reviewing it often so students feel very prepared for tests and cumulative finals. I have taken advanced math through differential equations and multi variable calculus, receiving top marks in all math classes. In high school I was recognized for my math tutoring and also by the math department for my strong math background. Lastly I was awarded the statewide honor of being the AP Math and Science Seimens Scholar for Washington State.

Although many student struggle with science classes, I believe that any scientific principle can be taught. I tutor using a concept, rather than memorization, driven approach that helps make science more accessible. I have used this method as a physics TA at Pomona College. During high school, I was awarded the statewide honor of being the AP Math and Science Seimens Scholar for Washington State. In college, I received distinction from the chemistry department on my thesis for teaching and mentoring younger students in the laboratory.

I am excited about tutoring and I cannot wait to see if I would be a good fit for you or your student.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
