About Shannon

I feel fortunate to have grown up in an environment where education was prioritized in and out of the classroom. A love of learning and the tools to self teach are the foundation for success in any endeavor and I have truly enjoyed opportunities to share my passion for learning, particularly about the natural world. I have taught groups ages pre-school to adult in both lecture settings and hands-on field settings. I have also advised high school, college, and graduate students on research projects and writing. It's incredibly rewarding to see how much progress a student can make in such a short period of time!

I grew up exploring the natural world and now have the privilege to learn about amphibian metamorphosis, the food habits of potato bugs, and feline behavioral response with my 7 year old daughter, who teaches me everyday! I have a Batchelor's in Biology, with a minor in Environmental Studies. My Master's is in Fisheries Science and I am currently completing my PhD in Marine Science. I have research experience in terrestrial, freshwater, and marine systems, but the majority of my research has taken place with marine mammals. I have taught science aboard a boat in Puget Sound, taught wildlife classes at the University of Washington, and have worked for government agencies, which have included outreach opportunities as well as research.

Attending a liberal arts college where effective writing was prioritized further honed the writing skills attained at Catlin Gabel. Writing and editing has been a significant part of my professional life and has included published scientific articles and reports.

I am available to tutor online or in-person Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 9:30-3:30, and some weekends. Evening online appointments may also be possible. I look forward to helping you achieve your academic goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Zoology

I believe I am qualified to tutor in the subject of zoology because of my educational and teaching experience in the field. I have taught zoological courses as a guest lecturer, TA for graduate level classes, and for a ship based educational program. I have numerous publications related to zoology.
