About Kira

The most rewarding aspect of tutoring for me is to see the happiness of my students when they succeed in reaching their goals. Whether it be that they aced a test or a paper that I helped them prepare for or maybe they finally grasped a concept that they had been struggling with. Whatever the case may be, I love to see people succeed.

I have been a writing and editing tutor/mentor for many people from elementary school students to college students and I have also given music lessons as a tuba player to middle and high school students. I strive to help my students enhance their skills so they can perform to the best of their abilities both academically and while pursuing their hobbies. I focus on helping them develop a strong work ethic in addition to refining the skills that they need for their specific subject.

I built my foundation as a writer and editor through my education at Purdue University, as I worked through the Professional Writing program, and I have continued to improve and expand my skills through internships, contract work, and blogging.

At Purdue, I was the go-to editor among my peers and I was a writing/editing tutor for students from all different majors who needed help with their English classes.

My philosophy focuses on a personal, well-rounded approach for each individual student. I believe that to be successful, students should be encouraged to pursue and develop their hobbies and interests, as well as their studies. This is why I offer, not only English help, but also other interest and recreation areas including fitness and music.

Want to know more about me and what I can offer you? Send me a message! My door is always open!

Elementary Education:
Elementary Math,

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary Math

When I was in grade school, math was a strong subject for me. Over the last 5-6 years or so, while I was in college and now post-grad, I have helped and continue to help students with elementary level math when I'm needed to do so. I have worked with them on homework assignments as well as test prep before.

I have always had a passion for fitness and I am always up for new fitness challenges and looking for ways to better myself as an athlete; this is something that I believe I can pass on to others to inspire them as they reach their fitness goals. My sports include horseback riding (I've been riding since age 5 and started riding competitively in 2012 as a member of the Purdue Hunt Seat Equestrian Team), running (I ran cross country and track in middle school and currently, I run half marathons regularly, and have a full marathon coming up soon), and CrossFit (I started CrossFit in January and have already come a long way with it and have learned so much that I would love to pass on to others!). I'm very enthusiastic about fitness and would love to use my working knowledge of fitness to help others achieve their goals.

I'm a great motivator to help people achieve their fitness goals.

General Music

I have been playing tuba since age 11 and have always qualified for top ensembles. In high school, I was in the top concert band all four years and I was also selected by my band director to be the tuba player for the high school orchestra. I also did marching band for five years and was the tuba section leader my senior year. I was invited, by the high school band directors, to march as an eighth grader. From eighth grade through my senior year of high school, I gave tuba lessons to beginners and helped them develop into topnotch players in the community that I lived in.
I continued to play tuba in college and was a member of the top concert bands at Purdue, as well as a member of the men's basketball pep band, Boiler Brass, which has been named the best college pep band in the country for multiple years. I have always loved teaching tuba to students and seeing them succeed as they reach their goals.

My focus when I'm giving lessons is on each individual student. I provide them with exercises that will both be enjoyable and beneficial for them and help them iron out their trouble spots while also identifying and enhancing their strengths.

I selected this category because tuba wasn't an option on the subject form. I can teach students how to read music and general music theory, but my main area of focus is tuba.

Grammar has always been a strong suit for me. As a professional writer, having a solid understanding of grammar has been a crucial skill. Although I'm proficient in it, I'm still constantly looking to improve.
As far as teaching grammar to students, my methods are geared towards providing them with tips and tricks to remember all of the grammar rules, from the major rules to the tiny details. I will also come up with activities and exercises that will help them remember what they learn. The possibilities are endless for all learning styles!

I've always been a strong proofreader and have an extensive knowledge of the English language and what to look for with regards to proofreading. At Purdue, I was the go-to editor among my peers. I provided proofreading/editing help to my fellow Professional Writing major peers as well as students from other areas of study who need a strong editor to look at something they have written.
I am sure to provide feedback to those I'm helping promptly and accurately. I also have the ability to help people who are looking to become better proofreaders by providing them with techniques, tips and tricks to improve their proofreading skills.

As a spelling tutor, I like to give my students ways to remember how to spell each word. Whether it be sounding it out, coming up with a word they know that rhymes with the new word, and so on, I tend to get pretty creative with that depending on what my students need. I would also give periodic spelling tests to assess their progress. My methods are adjusted to fit the needs of each student.

I get creative when I'm teaching vocabulary. Depending on the needs of my students, I have used a variety of methods including flash cards, making matching games, coming up with creative ways to remember each word that the student can relate to, and so on. I try to keep learning fun and productive for my students so that they can easily stay engaged and reap the benefits by retaining what they are learning.

I have been a writing/editing tutor for my peers for as long as I can remember. I have always been a strong writer and I even went on to study writing at Purdue University, where I earned my Professional Writing degree. At Purdue, I was constantly approached by my peers from other areas of study who were seeking help with writing courses and I was a popular tutor for ESL students who needed help with their English requirements.
I have experience writing in a wide variety of styles, from technical and scientific writing, to copywriting, blogging, and proposal writing.
