About Jessica

I have always been fascinated with people and the way they come to perceive the world. Hence I chose to major in psychology with plans to become a cognitive psychologist.

When I was in the 5th grade I realized I had a very short attention span and had to become my own teacher or fail math. Looking back I realize what a blessing it was to have my obstacles because I adapted and flourished in my environment. I taught myself math from the 5th grade on through calculus. I also had a bad memory so I had to discover ways of connecting all math in a complexity that was memory failure proof.

With the years of experience I built up logic. Those tricks and methods of seeing math I share with my students today. I have worked very successfully with students who have math phobias. In these cases I find that students bloom after defeating their fear and become the critical thinkers I have always known they had potential for. Having developed a large knowledge base of learning styles I easily find the best ways of explaining math concepts unique to that individual. We are all unique and we can all learn. Tutoring should be about finding your learning style as well. I see it as my job to help students not only learn individual math concepts but also develop a new perspective and math skills so they can get strong and independent for years to come.

I can read people and I have a mathematical intuition. I can connect people easily with mathematical understanding with those two intuitions. I also call myself the Queen of Ambiguity because I can see math concepts or math examples that can get confused miles away. I tailor my lessons to carefully guide students to the conclusion of the lesson and math logic. I really like to use examples to disprove common misconceptions too because understanding why things don't work in math is just as important as understanding what does work.

I have to admit I am very busy. I am a substitute teacher for Vancouver Public Schools and stay busy just teaching high school math classes. I also work 15 hours or so a week for a big tutoring company so I am pretty busy. My non busy times are all day on Sundays and Saturday and Friday evenings. I can also do 8:00 pm week days.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

SAT Math

I have worked with many SAT math students both in tutoring companies and privately.
