About Sarah

I am a WA & OR license teacher with 8 years of experience. I love tutoring students. I pre-assess students to see what it is they need to work on & then design curriculum that will specifically help them achieve their learning goals. I take the time to get to know your child. I find out their personal interests, hobbies, and learning styles. I incorporate this into the curriculum to make it more fun and interesting for the child.

Young children, children with ADD or ADHD, and children who do not like learning need frequent breaks. I try to make what we are learning into a game, and I have various boxed and online games. Some students may also need help with their motivation, so I reward them with: praise, points, free time, and prizes. I enjoy tutoring because I get to see a child make great leaps in their ability. It is rewarding to see their excitement when they have learned something new, and their confidence and self-esteem when they discover they are "smart enough" and capable. Students have frequently told me that they thought they weren't good at something, and now they think they are good at it! It is a great joy to know I am contributing to the future success of that child.

I am an excellent math tutor, K - 7. I have 8 years of experience. I use hands-on manipulatives, experiential activities, Common Core standards, and fun learning activities to teach students the skills they have been struggling with. I begin by pre-assessing students to find out what they need to learn, and teach them the skills they need to succeed at their grade level. Many parents tell me the teachers tell them that their child has made tremendous progress. Many parents tell me their child is now at grade level. And perhaps most importantly, students tell me they "know how to do it now" and that "now I'm good at math."

I am an excellent reading tutor, K - 12. I have 8 years of experience. I teach vocabulary, phonics skills, comprehension, and reading fluency so that children are able to improve their reading skills. I begin by pre-assessing students to find out what they need to learn, and teach them the skills they need to succeed at their grade level. I teach them what they need to learn according to their Common Core grade level standards. Many parents tell me the teachers tell them that their child has made tremendous progress. Many parents tell me their child is now at grade level. And perhaps most importantly, students thank me because now they are a good reader.

I teach Common Core state standards according to your child's grade level. If they are below level, we begin there and progress until they are achieving their grade level. I have 8 years of experience teaching K - 6th, reading, writing, and math. All of the students I've worked with have made improvement, and most have made significant gains.

I have my Special Education certification in WA & OR. I have worked with many students who have had ADD/ADHD. However, all are unique and vary greatly in their ability to focus and remain on tasks. I have 8 years of experience teaching K - 6th, reading, writing, and math. I break up the work into many short periods and give short breaks in between work. I use learning games and other rewards to give a child a break. I try to use activities in which the student can be actively engaged to help them remain focused. I find what works best with each child and create a program in which they are able to be successful learners.

I really care about the students I work with. I try to make tutoring a fun event that children look forward to. Most children make significant improvements, and some make great gains. I have many references available upon request. Please contact me to discuss how I might be able to help your child.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am an OR & WA state certified special education teacher. I have eight years of experience teaching, including students with ADD. Students vary greatly in their ability to sit still and focus. Usually the older they are, they have learned to control their impulses better and are able to sit still longer. However, all students with these issues need to have short learning times with frequent breaks in between. You need to assist them in refocusing on the task on hand. Positive rewards such as: praise, learning games, points, and rewards are helpful. Some students will also benefit by using seat cushions or hand fidgets, which I have.

Common Core

I have been trained in the Common Core state standards. Any tutoring your child receives is in alignment with the Common Core standards. I pre-assess and begin where your child is at. It may be at a lower grade level standard. Through tutoring, I am able to move them up to their grade level.

Dyslexia

I have worked with multiple students with Dyslexia. These students usually have poor auditory short-term memory which makes it difficult for them to remember longer items. They may have difficulty with long division, multi-digit multiplication, and more complex algebraic problems. This difficulty causes them to switch letters or numbers, which can create difficulty with many topics. These children need instruction that is clear, slow, and concise and time to process the demands. They need a teacher who is patient, understanding, and kind. They need material that they can be successful at, and then build on from there.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a state certified WA and OR teacher. I am Elementary certified K - 6th and Special Education certified K - 12. I have eight years of experience teaching. I go out of my way to make personal connections with students: to find out their hobbies, interests, and goals. I include these interests into what we are learning to make learning more fun and enjoyable for the student. I try to include hands-on, experiential learning activities and learning games as much as possible. I give a pre-test which shows me exactly what each student needs to learn. I begin teaching from their to get them to their grade level in both reading, writing, & math.

Handwriting

I have eight years of experience teaching students. I teach students how to write each letter in cursive, and give them practice writing these before they learn new letters. Eventually, all the letters are learned and students are able to write in cursive.

Phonics

I teach phonics to struggling readers so they can improve their ability to read. They learn all of the sounds in the English language and all of the letters that make these sounds. We practice with individual words, and then read passages laden with the words they've just learned. I have had great success improving the reading skills of students with low phonics skills.

Special Needs

I have a WA and OR Special Education License K - 12. I have eight years of experience teaching. I have worked with students with Autism, ADD, AD/HD, learning disabilities, TBI, Dyslexia, ODD, and emotional disabilities. Each child is unique and I get to know each child individually and find out their strengths and weaknesses. This shows me what strengths they can use to rely on to build up their weaknesses. It also tells me methodologies that will be successful in teaching them and which methodologies will not work. Sometimes you have to use a bit of a trial-and-error method to find the techniques that work best for each child. Parents are usually a wealth of information regarding their child, and will usually know these answers.
