About Kathy

I've graduated from two of the top universities in the country -- Stanford and Columbia -- and want to share my love of learning, as well as my tips for academic success with my students. I'm an enthusiastic, patient, experienced tutor who tries to make learning interesting, interactive and fun.

I especially like to teach ESL, English, and writing and SAT/ACT reading/writing preparation. I taught ESL to Japanese-speaking students of all ages while living in Japan for a year and a half. I have tutored high school and elementary-aged students in English and writing here at home for nine months.

I earned a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University and used my English and writing skills every day as a reporter for a daily newspaper for 14 years.

As a tutor, I'm an expert at breaking complex information down into simpler terms students can understand. I also teach students how to find and use resources (such as credible web sites) they need to succeed, even when I'm not in the same room with them.

I ask that students give me 24 hours' notice of a cancellation but will work with you to arrange make-up lessons.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you meet your academic goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I taught English as a Second Language to students of all ages, including high school-aged students, while living in Japan for a year and a half. I have tutored high school students in English here in the United States too.
I also earned a master's in journalism from Columbia University and used my English skills working as a newspaper reporter for 14 years.
I think the best way to teach students English is to teach them basic rules about the language and to help them expand their vocabularies but to also make learning English fun and interesting.

Anatomy

I recently earned my nursing license in Oregon. As part of my required prerequisites for the program, I took college-level Anatomy 1 and 2 in 2012 and received an A in both classes. I also tutored college students and adults for a year and a half as an English as a Second Language teacher while living in Japan for a year and a half.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught English as a Second Language to Japanese-speaking students of all ages, including elementary-aged students, while living in Japan for a year and a half.
I also was the director of an after-school program for elementary-aged students for six months here. In that program, I helped the students complete their homework in English, math, science, history and other subjects.
I think it's important to teach elementary-aged students the information they need to know in each of these subjects. But it's also important to make learning fun, interesting and interactive for them.

English

I taught English as a Second Language to Japanese-speaking students from the ages of infant through adult while living in Japan for a year and a half. I have tutored high school students here in English and writing.
I earned a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University in New York City and was a newspaper reporter for 14 years.

ESL/ESOL

I taught English as a Second Language to Japanese-speaking students of all levels and ages for a year and a half while living in Japan. I taught students from the ages of infant through adult.
In that position, I focused on improving students' conversational skills and helping them learn English so they could communicate better in real-life situations. I tried to make learning fun, interesting and interactive. I had to plan and implement lesson plans. I also regularly evaluated students to help them reach their learning goals.

Grammar

I worked as a reporter at daily newspapers for 14 years. I was required to use perfect grammar when writing and submitting stories to my editors. If I didn't, my editors would correct my grammar. They also would tell me what I had done wrong and what was the proper grammar to use in a certain situation.

Phonics

I taught phonics and pre-reading and pre-writing skills as a preschool teacher for 10 years.
I also taught phonics to preschoolers and elementary-aged students as an ESL teacher while living in Japan for a year and a half. I try to make learning phonics fun by incorporating games and other interactive activities.

Reading

I taught English, including reading, to students of all ages while living in Japan for a year and a half. I taught students whose ages ranged from toddler through adult. I also have tutored high school and elementary-aged students in reading here in the United States for nine months. This included recently helping a high school student study for the SAT reading test.

SAT Reading

I scored above the 90th percentile on the SAT reading test myself and helped high school students prepare for it as a high school tutor for two months. I also taught English, including reading skills, to Japanese-speaking students of all ages while living in Japan for a year and a half.
I think students learn reading best by getting chances to read passages taken from different subject areas, such as literature, history and science. I also try to give them reading opportunities that are increasingly challenging, but also interesting!

SAT Writing

I have a master's in journalism from Columbia University in New York City. I worked as a reporter for a daily newspaper for 14 years.
I also have tutored high school students in writing and in preparing for the writing part of the SAT exam.

Spelling

I worked as a reporter at daily newspapers for 14 years. I was expected to write stories in which all the words were spelled correctly. If I didn't, my editors would let me know about it.
As a tutor, I think the most effective way to teach students to spell is by teaching them the basic rules about spelling. I also like to give them a lot of opportunities to practice spelling. I gradually increase the difficulty of the words I ask a student to spell based on that student's abilities.

Study Skills

I've developed excellent study skills that have helped me to get accepted at and to succeed at two of the top universities in the country -- Stanford University and Columbia University. I more recently used my study skills to earn a nursing degree.

I recently have tutored two high school freshmen in study skills. To help them develop their study skills, I've encouraged them to find a way to keep track of assignments and to turn assignments in on time. I've encouraged them to limit any distractions that may keep them from staying focused while they are in class or doing their homework. I think learning to prioritize assignments is also an important study skill.

TOEFL

I taught English as a Second Language to Japanese-speaking students of all ages for a year and a half while living in Japan. My students included high school students preparing to enter college, college students and adults. I also have tutored high school students who speak English as a Second Language to help them prepare for standardized tests, such as the SAT, here in the United States.

Vocabulary

I taught English reading, writing and vocabulary to students of all ages while living in Japan for a year and a half. I have also tutored elementary-aged and high school students in English reading, writing and vocabulary for nine months here at home.

I earned a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. I then worked as a reporter at daily newspapers for 14 years. In that position, I had to use and expand my vocabulary skills every day.

Writing

I taught English, including writing, to Japanese-speaking students of all ages while living in Japan for a year and a half. I taught students from the ages of toddler through adult. I also earned a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University in New York City. After graduating, I used my writing skills every day while working as a reporter at daily newspapers for 14 years.

Great tutor — Since English is my second language, she helped me A LOT to provide me with a better understanding of SAT reading. Also she used our time really efficiently and gave me many useful resources which she personally prepared at home for me. She is a great tutor! ...
