Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

The joy of learning for struggling readers sometimes starts with focused, individualized attention and tutoring by a special educator is a great way to get that. Special Needs

I received my special educator credential at Cal State Northridge. I have taught special education in Oregon, California, and Washington public schools. I designed and ran programs for students with special needs at elementary and middle schools. As a tutor, I love working with students having difficulty and I love it when they finally find confidence and break through. My students remain motivated and happy because they find success. I conduct careful assessment of needs and work hard to find the right approaches to build on my students' individual strengths. I also have consulted with parents and with their child's school-based team to help make the changes needed for success in school.

Study Skills

I have taught special education in Oregon, California, and Washington public schools.
As a special educator I focused on study skills as well as remedial instruction in all areas, especially at the elementary and middle school levels. I take a student-centered approach to study skills development and use a variety of tools like setting goals, incentives, use of calendars and apps in order to help my students be successful. I also am a big believer in use of organizational aids like tabbed notebooks and binders. My core philosphy is that once students experience success they feel much more motivated to learn and to set aside the time needed to study.

I am a trained educator with many years experience both designing special education programs and working on a one-to-one basis with my students to build success. To build vocabulary, I assess my student's needs and find the right combination of approaches to meet their learning style. This may mean a more visual approach using pictures, using sound games like rhyming, or a more active approach using contextual cues and physical movement.

You will find that skilled, caring, and supportive attention from a tutor like myself can make all the difference!
