About Kay

My focus in college was elementary education as well as sociology and linguistics. I have taught ESL pronunciation for six years on a part-time basis. I have an extensive background working with children in an orthodontics office, and I enjoy working with children who need academic tutoring or pronunciation assistance. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked as a substitute para-educator in the Mukilteo and Shoreline Public School Districts. I have worked with students needing one-on-one help with reading and comprehension. Also, I worked for one year at Kendall Elementary School outside of Bellingham, Washington as an AmeriCorps Reading tutor.

Grammar

I have taken many grammar courses in college and feel that I am qualified to teach this specific subject. Many of the courses at Western Washington University dealt with syntax as well as grammar. I have a TESL certificate and while studying this course we focused on teaching grammar to ESL students.

Phonics

I teach the International Phonetic Alphabet to English as a Second language students at Shoreline Community College. I have been a tutor at SCC for more than six years. My specialty is teaching the sounds of English (IPA).

Study Skills

While attending college, I took a course called college-text reading and learned many useful study skills. Also, I have learned study skills by reading books on teaching English as a second language. Teaching students to paraphrase after reading a paragraph is just one study skill I have used.

Swimming

I have taught swimming to children for the past two years at two different private pools in Vancouver. I teach using the Red Cross Method. Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.
