About Katie

I absolutely love learning and teaching. I've been a school fanatic my entire life (I know, I know) and if I had all the money in the world, I would probably be in school forever. I believe that teaching is one of the best ways to learn, and I think this is why I love doing it so much.

I got my start in the education world in a really cool way: I was a historic reenactor at a museum, performing historic personas to teach people about the history of my hometown. From that point on, I've been learning how to teach and teaching in non-traditional ways. When you teach people in non-school settings, you have the freedom to explore ideas in multi-disciplinary ways and make connections between things that you might not typically make. With me, you can be sure that you'll never feel like you're in school.

In college, I tutored Spanish, government and economics, and social studies. I've worked at 3 different museums in education departments, teaching subjects as varied as American history, sciences like botany and astronomy, and art history.

I have taken both the ACT and the SAT, receiving high scores in the English and Reading/Writing sections. I took the test prior to the 2016 change, but I am familiar with the new changes and am confident I can help you achieve high scores in those areas.

I think I'm a great Spanish tutor because I love the language so much. I watch lots of Spanish movies and television, I read books in Spanish, I listen to music from Spanish-speaking countries, and I have a subscription to two Spanish-language magazines. I even spent two weeks in Spain in 2014. I also take a Spanish class every week. I am really steeped in the language and the culture and I bring this to my students, inspiring them to take their love of the language to the next level.

I have always loved history and social studies. I have worked for two history museums and one historic house. I have a degree in History, with an emphasis in early American history. I am amazing at the history category in Trivia Crack (one of my favorite games, by the way). Basically, if I had to pick my favorite subjects in school, history and social studies would be at the top of the list. I think my love of history is infectious, which has made me really successful as a history teacher! History is not boring - the way you have been taught it is. Let me prove that history is awesome.

I hope something about me has sparked an interest in you! I am available for both in-person and online tutoring sessions and I have a very flexible schedule. Please feel free to get in touch.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have a degree in History, with an emphasis in early American History from Hanover College. My thesis paper dealt with the practice of contraception by female slaves in the Antebellum South. My focus in early American history (1600-1900) has also given me a very solid background in the history of Europe pre-1900. I have worked as a museum educator at two history-focused museums and one historic house, all of which focused primarily on American history.

Art History

I received a minor in Art History from Hanover College. Had I completed a thesis paper and final comprehensive exam, I would have had a degree in Art History, in addition to the degree in History that I received. I also studied American Art and Architecture at The Philadelphia Center with a former Chief City Planner of Philadelphia, who was an architect and historian. I have taught art history in a museum education setting.

English

I received high scores on the SAT (600) and ACT (35) Reading/Writing/English sections when I took the test in 2002. The tests and their score structures have changed a lot since then, but I am familiar with the latest updates to the ACT and SAT and their new scoring structures as of 2016. Additional evidence that I am proficient in these areas: I was exempt from taking college level English classes due to my ACT/SAT scores. Excellent writing and reading skills are also usually found in a holder of two degrees in humanities fields. Outside of academia, I am a hugely avid reader. Last year, I read 48 books and have set a goal for myself of 50 books this year. I am currently doing the Book Riot 2016 Reading Challenge, to encourage myself to read books outside of the genres I am typically interested in. Favorite book so far of 2016: either Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay or The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith.

European History

I have a degree in History from Hanover College. In college I took part in a three-semester, 5-day-a-week class called Eurasia. In this class, we learned about Europe and Asia by looking at their history, culture, sciences, and religion, from the Epic of Gilgamesh to the present day. I also took European history survey classes, covering pre-history to the present. My degree focus in early American history (1600-1900) has given me a very solid background in the history of Europe, especially pre-1900, as the history of Europe had significant impact on the development of the early United States.

Social Studies

I have a BA in history (emphasis in American history) and I have also tutored US government and economics at the AP level. My work in the education departments of history museums has given me significant experience teaching the social studies in non-traditional settings. History is by default an interdisciplinary subject and covers the topics usually included in social studies, especially government and economics/civics; geography; world history and cultures; and philosophy/religion. In college I was part of a class that was offered called Eurasia. In this class, which lasted for three semesters, we covered the history of Europe and Asia by looking at their histories, cultures, sciences, and religions. Social studies has always been a favorite school subject of mine and I feel very comfortable tutoring it.

Spanish

I studied Spanish for 2 years while a student as Hanover College. I tutored high school level Spanish as part of the AVID tutoring program at Madison Consolidated High School. For the past two years I have been taking a weekly Spanish class, where I have further developed my reading, speaking, and writing skills to an Advanced Intermediate level. I am knowledgeable in grammar (including Past, Present, Future, Conditional, Subjunctive and Perfect tenses) and vocabulary. I spent two weeks in Spain in 2014 as an opportunity to immerse myself in the language. I subscribe to two Spanish-language magazines and frequently read books in Spanish to broaden my language abilities. I also use Duolingo as a tool for continual practice.

World History

I am very familiar with American, European, Asian, and African history. Please see all history category qualifications for more information. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Very patient and Kind — Katie came 18 times over a two month period to help our son who was failing Spanish. She helped him get focused and communicated well with our 15 year old, me and his teacher. She was very patient when he would get frustrated and pointed out all of the positives. His final test in in a few days and he feels confident. ...
