About Kimberly

I have been studying Japanese for about 11 years, and graduated with my Bachelors in Japanese from the University of Puget Sound in May, 2016. I visited Japan in 2012 and spent the summer of 2015 studying abroad at the Kyoto Institute of Culture and Language (KICL).
I have some experience tutoring, but nothing super formal. I love working with high school students and college students who have a love of language and have a desire to learn. Japanese is a difficult language, but it can also be a lot of fun. Using a language in a practical way makes it more engaging and easier to retain.
For those who are starting with the basics and just learning Japanese, I like to first start with some basic vocabulary and the basic sentence structure. By learning how to conjugate sentences and using the vocabulary in a practical way, it will be easier to learn harder sentence patterns.
Japanese has three different writing systems: hiragana, katakana, and kanji. For beginners, It's best to start with romaji, the romanized version of these characters and learn the hiragana and katakana as you learn. I think it's best to learn kanji after learning and using the basic characters. It makes it easier to learn them. However, they get difficult fast, and I will use practice sheets often to help you memorize them. I have a list of materials that can be useful, and a few potential texts that can be helpful. Depending on the level of Japanese, there might be one or more texts that will be used. I can, and would be willing to provide copies of chapters from textbooks that I own and have used in previous classes that I have taken.
For those who have a basic understanding of some sentence structures and vocabulary, I use similar worksheets and practice pages for new concepts as well as practical use. As sentence patterns and concepts become more difficult, the goal is to move to writing entries about certain topics completely in Japanese.

I also have practical language use in Japan. I spent several weeks in Japan in 2012 and had to be able to use Japanese in day to day life, and more recently spent 2 months living in Kyoto with a host family. English is rarely spoken in Japan, so being able to effectively communicate is important. I can help someone learn the basics for what they will need to know if they are going to Japan and give tips for how to speak in the appropriate honorifics depending on who they are talking to.

If you would like to ask any questions or inquire about tutoring at the beginner and intermediate level, please send me a message. I would be happy to answer any questions about the language and materials I use to learn the language.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Japanese

I am qualified to teach Japanese due to my completion of higher level Japanese language courses. My classes include up to the 311 level, which is at the JLPT N3 and N2 levels.
I have lived in Japan for a short period to study abroad, and not only completed and passed my language course, but also lived with a Host Family who did not speak English. I have experience using Japanese in my daily life, which is important when learning and using a language.
