I am a retired high school mathematics teacher. My first mathematics love is Algebra. However, I have successfully taught students at all levels from Basic Math through Pre-Calculus. During my 33 years behind the desk in my classroom, my greatest joys came from helping students understand math concepts. Also, I have tutored students outside of the classroom. Those experiences helped to better connect with students as they received my full attention. I have found that there needs to be a desire on the student's part to understand the concepts and procedures to pass the course. My job is to help the student achieve that goal.
I know everyone does not have the same "love" of mathematics that I do but I know that everyone can be successful with work and determination. I will do my part to communicate and explain the material so that each student can understand and learn. I strive to make it a comfortable environment so that maximum teaching and learning can take place. I am a retired high school mathematics teacher. My first mathematics love is Algebra. She was a great tutor! Very patient and actually worked out the problems with me. I would definitely recommend her to anyone struggling with math.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught Algebra 1 for 30 years of my 33 year career. I have helped a countless number of students not just pass algebra, but also understand algebra. I love seeing the "light bulbs" of comprehension click on.
Algebra 2 is even more fun than Algebra 1. Students need to know there are rules to solving algebraic problems and if they just follow the rules, the solution is found. This is truly one of my favorite subjects to teach/tutor.
I have successfully taught geometry to many students during my 33 years as a high school mathematics teacher. Some students greatly benefit from one-to-one instruction. It's always enjoyable to see when they grasp the concept.
The higher level math courses can be challenging to learn at first. All the student needs to do is follow the formulas/rules to find the solution. Precalculus is learned by completing the process to solve a type of problem at least 10 times to gain mastery. I will work hard to encourage the student to solve just one more of the type of problem that we are working to solve.
Trig is a great subject! There are a few 'tricks' that will help the student remember the trig functions. There is a lot of number manipulation to play with. I love this topic of mathematics and I love to teach it.
