I am a K-8 certified teacher. I taught 1st-5th grade for 20 years in Seattle Public Schools. I have a Special Education endorsement and am qualified to teach all general education subject areas. My experience with a range of learning styles and ethnic backgrounds provides me the ability to teach all elementary age children. I believe that having a commitment to strengthening literacy skills while having fun is the key to successful learning. I am especially strong in the academic areas of reading, writing, science and mathematics and excel at teaching problem solving skills through non-violent communication.

Melanie has been patient, firm, and encouraging. She is working with our 11 year old son to improve his reading and writing skills. He is NOT a fan of writing. Melanie has been working with him at several levels of skill: basic handwriting, spelling, and larger themes in story composition. At the end of his last session, he was both enjoying the work and very pleased with his progress on an ambitious story. At times our son begins with a less than perfect attitude about working on these issues, but Melanie is able to gently but firmly push him into some initial work and then get him fully engaged on the lesson. The time is well planned and well spent. Also, Melanie offers a number of approaches and resources that are beyond what we could have brought to bear on several of the instructional challenges.
I have a special education endorsement from the U.W. I worked with many students who had both ADD and ADHD with great success!
I have held a special education endorsement since 1995. I spent a year teaching a self contained autism classroom, a year at the Seattle Children's Home (day treatment) and have had students with autism mainstreamed or with an Instructional Assistant in my general education classroom (with IEPs) most of my career in Seattle Public Schools. I have had excellent success working with these students.
Working with all students for 21 years in Seattle Public Schools, I taught many students who had both identified and unidentified dyslexia.

As a general ed teacher for 21 years, I taught handwriting with great success. My favorite program is "Handwriting Without Tears."
For the past 2 years, I homeschooled a 11-13 year old girl who was developmentally delayed. We worked together for 20 hours/week in her Seattle home. I taught all subjects with an emphasis on reading. I was successful in raising her from a late 2nd grade reading level to a solid 6th grade level in 2 years. Daily, I integrated local resources, nature, art and animal care into her reading, writing and mathematics. Science and social studies were experienced! I have an excellent reference upon request.
I am trained in several modalities of teaching phonics to students in the primary grades. I taught 1st - 3rd grades for 18 years.
I hold a special education endorsement for all levels of needs including severe and profound and worked with these children for a year at the beginning of my teaching career.
I taught spelling every year for 18 years as a general education teacher in Seattle Public Schools.
As a general education elementary school teacher, it was part of my daily job to insure that my students learned study skills. I used a reading log that went between home and school every day as well as binders for the 3rd graders and daily math homework.
I taught tennis in an after school program to 4th and 5th graders in Seattle. I am also an intermediate tennis player who won many tournaments and led my 3.5 women's team as a singles player to Regionals. We were the best 3.5 team in the Northwest one year.
