About Daniel

I have a B.S. from the University of Washington in Applied and Computational Math Sciences and have eight months experience tutoring at a private center. Since graduating from college I've taken a variety of courses in the fields of civil and electrical engineering. This adds up to me being very fluent in mathematics from Algebra 1 through Differential Equations.

Although from high school onward math was my favorite subject, it was also my most difficult. I know what it's like to struggle with a new concept. But I also know what it's like to persevere, grasp that concept, and eventually understand it backwards and forwards, and I really enjoy being able to help others through this process.

I teach mostly by involving the student, guiding them through the process of solving a problem with questions and simple examples. My own experience is that if a teacher is solving the problem themselves while talking me through it, it goes in one ear and out the other. Often a student's problem is nothing but a lack of engagement, or at least the right kind of engagement.

Let me know if you think I could be of any help to you. I also have a solid grasp of circuit analysis, engineering statics/dynamics, mechanics of materials, and general chemistry.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

Algebra has been an essential skill in every math and science class that I've taken since high school.

Calculus

My score on the AP Calculus test (covering differentiation and integration) was a 5 and I received As in the rest of the college calc sequence. What I learned in these courses was essential to all of the math and most of the science courses I subsequently took. I've loved calculus from day one and I enjoy helping others appreciate and understand it.

Chemistry

My score on the AP Chemistry test, which covers the material in college general chemistry, was a 5. I was also top of my class in terms of percentage grade. In my senior year at UW I took three 400-level physical chemistry courses which helped to solidify my understanding of general chemistry.

Differential Equations

I received an A in Ordinary Differential Equations my sophomore year of college and continued to study ordinary and partial differential equations in numerous courses thereafter.

Precalculus

Precalculus formed much of the basis for the math I studied at UW and I continue to use it in engineering classes. It's also worth mentioning that I won the Junior Class Mathematics Award for Precalculus in high school.

SAT Math

I scored a 740 on SAT Math in high school and most of my current tutoring job is helping students prepare for the SAT and ACT math sections. I have a very good feel for the types of questions on the test and the methods for finding their answers.

Best tutor ever!

My college son, who has very little patience, worked with Daniel on Calculus. He was thrilled, which means I was, too! "Mom, he knows his stuff! I finally understand things!" He can relate effectively to teens and is prepared. His f/u response to me was prompt and professional, which is really appreciated, since I live >120 miles away and can't be there to observe the session myself. My son has wo
