I have been a full-time 3rd grade teacher in Arizona for three years. Additionally, I have over 18 years worth of experience as a guest teacher in grades K-5 in the Franklin Pierce School District.
I have learned new ways of teaching math concepts and have learned much in the area of teaching reading and language arts as well. I have studied the different learning styles (auditory, visual, and kinesthetic) and have learned to adapt my strategies to fit the individual needs of my students and how they learn best.
I very much enjoy helping students who need extra assistance so they can get caught up (and maybe even surpass) their classmates. I like to play games and do activities to help students learn in a fun way. I am very creative and can even make up my own materials to help students learn.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I had been certified in Elementary Education here in WA; however, I did not have the finances to keep it renewed. In lieu of this, prior to my certificate expiring, I was able to get a Substitute Teacher certification that is good indefinitely. I have been a guest teacher in the Franklin Pierce School District since '93.
As a 3rd grade teacher on the Navajo Indian Reservation for 3 years, I taught phonics skills to my students. We had been mandated to teach using Whole Language (which I did); however, I knew my students would have been at a disadvantage in taking the standardized tests if I had not taught the phonics skills.
As a classroom teacher, I have worked with students to find out what learning style best helps them to obtain the most information in the way that is best for them.
Some students are auditory, some are visual, and some are kinesthetic learners. There are some that need more than one modality to help them learn. Once I discover which learning style(s) the individual student needs, I can develop strategies to help him/her best achieve success.
