Hi! My name is Kayla and I am a senior at Gonzaga University. I am currently studying Sociology and Elementary Education, and will gain my Washington State Residency Certificate and K-8 endorsement upon graduation. I currently hold a 3.87 unweighted cumulative GPA and am a consistent Dean's List and President's List recipient. I have extensive experience working with elementary-aged students, spending just over 60 hours teaching and interacting with kindergartners, 3rd graders, and 6th graders in local schools during my time at Gonzaga. I also serve in a variety of mentorship and service-oriented roles on campus, preparing and leading interactive science activities, working with after-school programs, and planning and executing curriculum.

About Math: Growing up, I always struggled with math and thought it was something I was bad at. It had never occurred to me that math was something that I could not only succeed in, but excel at. It was only when I began to realize my own potential, and dig deeply into the resources around me, that I began to understand (and even enjoy) math. I was placed onto an accelerated math track in 6th grade, and took honors classes throughout middle school and high school. I am well-versed and competent in the areas of algebra, calculus, geometry, and probability and statistics. I believe that these difficult experiences are foundational to my current posture towards math, and find a certain value in productive struggle. I currently am in a "Mathematical Methods" course at Gonzaga University, where I find myself continually exposed to effective mathematical teaching practices. I have lesson-planned and taught several lessons using these strategies in a kindergarten classroom with high-success, deep procedural fluency, and significant conceptual understanding.

About Science: My love for science and inquiry has only grown as I have gotten older. I have taken a variety of biology, chemistry, physics, math, and astronomy classes throughout my middle school and high school career, and am currently enrolled in a course titled "Methods of Science". In this class, I learn how to deliver effective science instruction to elementary school students. I also have a strong understanding of foundational concepts in science, just having taken a class titled that last year. I also have served as a volunteer of a mentoring program titled "Science in Action" at Gonzaga, preparing and leading interactive science activities in a third-grade classroom.

About Writing: My fifth-grade teacher could tell that I was looking for something to love, and introduced me to a variety of subjects to see what would pique my interest. When we started a creative writing unit on short stories, I found what I was looking for. For the next three months, she sat and worked with me as I crafted elaborate short stories. She even helped me to turn it into my very own collection, complete with illustrations and peer feedback. My teacher instilled in me an interest in writing, a strong work ethic, and a love for learning. Ever since then, I can't stop writing! I have taken an incredible variety of language arts and English classes throughout middle school and high school, and received an exemplary score on my AP Literature exam. On the SAT, my critical reading and writing scores are my highest categories (730 and 700 respectively). I am also a self-published author, and have released two collections of poetry on the online platform CreateSpace. My collections can be found on Amazon and in a variety of bookstores.

I would love to get connected with you! Please let me know if you have any additional comments or questions, I am more than happy to help in whatever way I can.
