About Jillian

I am an ESL teacher in Spokane who has a passion for working one-on-one students to meet their specific needs. Tutoring as a junior in high school and then as a student-teacher in grad school gave me a desire to continue working with students on an individual basis when the opportunity presented itself. I have also pursued a career in teaching, which I am currently continuing here in Spokane. I taught for two years in Torreon in the state of Coahuila, Mexico at the Tech of Monterrey, a renown school with multiple campuses in Mexico and many branches in Latin America. Though my most valued skills for my position are knowledge of English grammar, writing (especially English 101 or college beginner writing), and TOEFL test taking skills, I have a bachelor's degree in Spanish and a minor in journalism. If my skills in Spanish are needed, I would be more than happy to offer my services as a Spanish tutor as well. Please contact me if you would like help in any of these areas, whether you are an ESL student, a college student wanting to brush up on composition skills, or a the parent of a high school student or middle school student seeking a tutor to help in the summer time. I look forward to meeting you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

More about my grammar and writing qualifications:

I've been a teacher since 2010, when I started teaching English 101 through the English Department at Eastern Washington University as part of a teaching assistantship program for my masters in teaching English as a second language. I taught various content courses in English in Mexico for two years at the Tecnologico de Monterrey (Campus Laguna). Currently, I teach TOEFL preparation, grammar-focused courses, and composition courses for ESL students at the Spokane College of English Language. I also completed a major in Spanish at Eastern Washington University, so I have a unique understanding of grammar concepts in English from a language-learning perspective. In addition to my qualifications, I have a passion for teaching writing and the process of revising and editing, which was a major topic I covered in my masters thesis.

Writing

I currently teach a writing class twice a week to English language learners who are preparing for proficiency tests such as the TOEFL or the IELTS. My primary career focus these past four years has been on ESL/EFL curriculum planning, instruction, and assessment. Many of the classes I have taught, especially during my two years in Mexico, have focused on writing instruction, particularly essay writing. In my master's thesis, I focused on the issue of written feedback on student writing as it pertains to ESL students. I taught for English 101 one year during my graduate program as a graduate student teacher/teaching assistant at Eastern Washington University while simultaneously interning as a responder at Eastern's Writer's Center. In addition to these experiences, I have tutored students during office hours on writing issues such as paragraph and essay organization and content, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
