About Nikki

I am currently a Doctorate Student and a home-schooling mom. I have been home-schooling since 2005 and have taught all levels and subjects, pre-school through 12th grade. I personally have 2 children with ADHD, 1 child with ADD, 2 children with severe health issues and 1 child with Dyslexia.

I have earned my Bachelor's in K-8 Education and my Master's in Education. As a classroom teacher, I taught in several areas. I taught 7th grade Reading, Language Arts and P.E. I taught 8th grade Language Arts and U.S. History. I taught 5th and 6th grade contained classrooms. I have experienced great success with children that most teachers have "given up on". I have a clear understanding of the core curriculum standards that the State of Washington is moving toward. I am able to help children study and prepare for the Smarter Balance test, and I am confident that I am able to help enhance your child's confidence in the subjects he or she is struggling in. I have several techniques that are extremely successful.

I am available during the day if you are willing to travel and after school at one of the public libraries.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have a Bachelor's in education and I am K-8 certified. While earning my Bachelor's degree I was required to complete various classes on learning disabilities. One of the courses was, Teaching students with ADHD and other learning challenges. I completed the course with a 4.0

I also have a Master's in education with an emphasis in Counseling. It was while earning this degree that I took a course on how the ADHD brain works. I completed the course with a 4.0

Since then, while homeschooling my own ADHD child I participated in an online course called "Pay Attention" ADHD through the lifespan. I also completed an online course called, "Teaching Students with ADHD" through South Seattle Community College.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a Bachelor's in K-8 Education through Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, ID. I have had a 5th grade classroom and a 6th grade classroom in the state of Washington.

I have home-schooled my children from pre-school through 12th grade. I am familiar with the State's current EALR's and the Common Core Standards for all Elementary grades.

Handwriting

I have a Bachelor's in K-8 education and part of earning this degree included opportunities to participate in various philosophies on teaching Handwriting to elementary aged children.

While earning my Master's degree I had the opportunity to participate in a class that taught me about how the brain works in relation to learning. In this class it described distinct time frames in the development of synapses in the brain that maximize learning in everything including handwriting.

Since then I have participated in Peterson's Method of Instructing Handwriting course and Handwriting without tears for the younger years.

Phonics

I have a Bachelor's in education and I am K-8 certified. While earning my Bachelor's degree I was required to complete various classes that taught Phonics, Whole language and Reading.
