About Melissa

I decided to be a teacher because I was passionate about helping young people build self-confidence as they become more and more comfortable with their math and science classes. I'm a certified science teacher and I LOVE math and science. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology as well as a science endorsement which includes Chemistry, Physics and Geology. In my own studies I completed college level math courses up to and including Calculus with scores between 3.8 and 4.0.

I have been tutoring students in math and science for over 10 years on my own. I also worked as a teacher/tutor at Sylvan Learning Center for 2 years and I'm currently teaching Math and Science and tutoring students at the East Valley Parent Partnership Program in the East Valley School District. I have tutored students in Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Algebra Trigonometry, Geometry, and Pre-calculus as well as elementary math, reading, and writing.

I push students gently and guide them to their own understanding of a concept, not just memorization of steps/terms. I have helped many students prepare for end of course, SAT or ACT exams. I look forward to helping you!

If you would like to learn more about how I can help you, please send me a message and tell me what subject you're requesting help with. I look forward to working with you and getting to know you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I taught the Biology 100 (Introductory Biology) college level lab course for a year at Eastern Washington University. I have taught Biology, AP Biology, Chemistry and AP Chemistry in Spokane, WA.

Elementary (K-6th)

Although my teaching degree is in secondary education, I have been teaching K-6 math and science at EVPPP for over a year. I really enjoy working with students of all ages. I cross cut multiple subjects in my classes. I read many books with students (while employing reading comprehension strategies), guide student research, discuss history that is relevant to the math or science topic at hand, and work on reading, spelling, and writing skills often during class. I feel confident that I could help K-6 students on any topic.

Genetics

As part of my Bachelor's of Science degree at Eastern Washington University, I was required to take a high level genetics course. I loved it! I teach a genetics unit in my high school biology course at the East Valley Parent Partnership Program.

I also worked at a genetics lab at Eastern Washington University for over a year, and then worked for a year and a half at a genetics lab called Signature Genomics. I have extracted DNA, labeled, DNA, ran micro array analysis and prepped slides for karyotyping by cytogentic technologists.

Homeschool

I am currently working at a homeschooling parent partnership program in the East Valley School District called the East Valley Parent Partnership Program. I work with students and their parents to supplement the students' education in the areas of math, science, reading, writing, and basic to advanced computer skills. I also occasionally assist my sister with homeschooling her children.

Prealgebra

I worked with students on their pre-algebra homework for two years at Sylvan Learning Center and over a year in the East Valley School District in Spokane, WA. I have learned a lot of tricks and different ways of explaining difficult concepts that can really help students grasp the material.

Swimming

I swam laps from 2007-2010 in the lap pool at Eastern Washington University. I would swim 3-4 times per week for about an hour at a time. I continually improved my technique and efficiency. I also completed a swim conditioning course at EWU. I currently swim in the lap pools at the YMCA buildings in Spokane 2-3 times per week. I love helping others with their technique if they would like help. I can spot ways that someone could improve their swim times, or suggest ways for them to condition themselves and challenge themselves in the pool.
