I have worked as a tutor and a test proctor for 14 years at the local Community College. The methods I have used are face-to-face tutoring and online tutoring. As a proctor, I monitor tests from the classrooms, and I have also been a proctor for the SATs and ACTs. I have developed many close relationships with my students and followed their progress up to graduation.
I have also taught Reading Skills and College Reading at the same college for 2 years using a computer-based program (Weaver), lessons and homework from text books, and checked progress with quizzes and tests. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to tutor this subject because I have been teaching Reading Skills and College level Reading for the past two years at the local community college. I have worked with students one-on-one to help them raise their reading level to meet college requirements. I spend a lot of time reading for personal enjoyment and love to share my enthusiasm with others. My favorite book is the dictionary!
I have worked as a test proctor for the SAT exams for two years. Reading is one of the major components of the SATs. I can help students learn how to use critical thinking and other techniques when studying for the Reading proficiency part of the SATs. Vocabulary and comprehension are more important than speed in the reading part of the tests, therefore I focus on techniques to improve comprehension.
I am qualified to tutor in writing since it goes hand-in-hand with reading and vocabulary. The Writing proficiency part of the SATs requires a good understanding of grammar, punctuation, spelling, word tense, and sentence structure. It also requires a knowledge of writing styles and audiences. I work with students to help them develop good writing skills.
I am qualified to tutor students in Vocabulary because as part of my Reading class, students must learn new words to increase their understanding of what they are reading. Vocabulary, spelling, and word definitions are vitally important to college learning. I am an avid and competitive Scrabble player as well as a crossword enthusiast.
Writing is an important part of college studies. Students will be required to write many essays and term papers. I can help students learn how to develop a thesis for their writing, how to outline their proposed work, and how properly cite all references and quotations used in their work.
