Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I love everything about English. I love the history of the language, its Germanic roots and the effects of the Norman invasion. I love literature, the way it reflects and shapes our understanding of the world. I love studying English, using linguistics to explore its inner workings and mechanics. But most of all, I love having the opportunity to share my enthusiasm for English with others.

ESL/ESOL

Simply put, helping people learn English is the greatest joy of my life. I love watching people become more fluent speakers and better writers. I love being there when a person understands a grammar point that had confused them. I love that I can help people improve their lives by improving their ability to communicate.

Grammar

Grammar is my passion! Before I moved to Spokane to begin my master's in Teaching English as a Second Language, I taught ESL at an adult school in Denver for three years and at an intensive English program in Costa Rica for two. I was always trying to think of new ways to help my students understand grammar, because I believe that grammar is key to developing fluency in speaking and writing.

As a master's student, my own understanding of grammar has deepened, and I have learned many new ways to help students understand its intricacies. Currently, I'm teaching a grammar class at the intensive English program on campus. It is so rewarding to be back in the classroom and put into practice what I've been learning these last few years. I look forward to putting my new skills into practice helping students through WyzAnt.

Reading

Reading can be a great pleasure, but it requires certain skills. Successful readers pay attention to the way individual sentences work together to form paragraphs. When studying, they identify the topic sentence of a paragraph and rephrase it as a question, bringing the supporting details to light. When reading fiction, they are aware of different genres, so they can correctly interpret details and plot devices.

Luckily these skills can be learned. Learning them not only makes reading more rewarding, it guarantees improved success in school and in life. I am confident I can help you or your child learn to become a better reader.

Writing

Having completed a bachelor's in English and the coursework for a master's in Teaching English as a Second Language, I have written a lot of papers. Also, as an on-campus tutor, I've helped a lot of ESL students improve their writing . Finally, as part of my master's, I completed a practicum in a Writing class, where I had the privilege of working with a really great teacher. I'm eager to put what I learned form her to work helping my own students.
