About Wesley

Dear students and families,

Hello! I just moved to Spokane to work on writing, teaching, and coaching. I'm looking forward to getting to know the neighborhood...

I spent most of the past four years teaching Humane Letters, a seminar in great books, at Chandler Preparatory Academy, a Great Hearts charter school in Arizona. I taught 9th, 10th, and 12th grade Humane Letters, as well as 7th and 8th grade Literature and Composition, coached soccer at the Middle School, High School JV and Varsity levels, and coordinated the senior thesis. I also sponsored creative writing and coordinated peer consultations in the writing center.

Prior to that, I earned a Master's in Liberal Arts at St John's College, Annapolis, MD, and taught English in Uruguay on a Fulbright grant, where I visited schools of all levels and started a writing workshop for future teachers of English.

Meanwhile, of course, I was also improving my Spanish. I have also studied abroad in Granada, Spain and worked summer jobs with the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth in Puebla, Mexico and Madrid, Spain. So not only is my Spanish fluent across a couple major regions, I can offer my experiences as a motivation for you to see the tangible benefits of learning a foreign language.

My tutoring and teaching experience comes mainly at the high school and university level. I worked as a peer consultant in the Washington College Writing Center, and while pursuing my MA I worked as a Graduate Writing Assistant at St John's and as a substitute teacher in Montgomery County and Anne Arundel County, MD Public Schools. That's also when I started to tutor through WyzAnt.

I have worked with younger students, too, in Boston Public Schools as a Corps Member at City Year Boston, and as a Reading Coordinator with the Tenacity Summer Camps.

Back when I took the 1600-scale SAT, I had perfect Verbal Scores and an overall 1510, qualifying as a National Merit Scholar and Maryland Distinguished Scholar. I think daily practice in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, rooted in attention to the great works of past and present, will help all students reach their goals and enrich their lives.

So I'm still busy learning--reading the great books, writing what I hope will be good books, and taking an online course in Old English through Signum University--but I would be happy to help you out in any way. I hope to hear from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

For the past four years I have taught English as part of a high school seminar on great books, and middle school Literature and Composition at a Prep School. I have tutored fellow students as a Peer Consultant at the Washington College Writing Center and as the Graduate Writing Assistant at St John's College. My experience as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Uruguay included leading and participating in writing workshops in both Spanish and English.

ESL/ESOL

I'm currently working as a substitute teacher in Montgomery County Public Schools, where I fill in for ESOL classes fairly often, but for most of the past year, I lived abroad in Uruguay on a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant-ship. While there, I organized writing workshops for future teachers of English, maintained conversation practice with current teachers, and visited classes to share with students personal and cultural viewpoints of the US and Uruguay. I've also worked at summer camps for Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth in Puebla, Mexico and Madrid, Spain.

Reading

For the past four years I have taught reading as part of a high school seminar on great books, and middle school Literature and Composition at a Prep School. I have tutored fellow students as a Peer Consultant at the Washington College Writing Center and as the Graduate Writing Assistant at St John's College, practicing careful reading as an aid to writing. My experience as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Uruguay included training teachers in ways to teach reading in their classes.

Religion

I'm currently enrolled in the Philosophy and Theology semester in the Graduate Institute at St. John's College, Annapolis. Along with these readings from the Western canon--from the Bible, Plato, Augustine, etc--I have studied the Tao Te Ching and the Qu'ran in coursework at Washington College. William James' Varieties of Religious Experience, however, is the work perhaps most in line with my own approach to matters of religion.

Soccer

I played since I was 6 years old, first in the recreational league in Gaithersburg, then with the Olney Bengals club team in the NCSL league. I was on the school teams in middle and high school, starting every game. Though I graduated in three years from Washington College, I played my final two years there, again starting every game. I have played abroad, as well, in Spain and Uruguay, through my study abroad, summer work, and Fulbright grant. This included organizing games with Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth in Spain and Mexico, and with the teachers' college in Salto, Uruguay.

Spanish

I majored in Spanish in college, studying abroad in Spain. I taught English in Uruguay on a Fulbright grant in 2010, using Spanish on a daily basis as part of the cultural exchange and taking part in a writing workshop in Spanish. Since then, I have worked on translations from Spanish to English and taught intro Spanish as a long-term substitute.

Tennis

I played throughout high school, as high as first singles and first doubles in my junior and senior years. I learned there and through lessons with old soccer buddies at Norbeck Country Club. In college, I hit with players on the team from time to time. After working at City Year Boston, I had a job as Reading Coordinator with the Tenacity organization, where I would also help run the drills and games for kids just learning tennis, as well as hitting with the other coaches. These days I continue to play regularly with other students at St. John's.

Writing

For the past four years I have taught writing as part of a high school seminar on great books, and middle school Literature and Composition at a Prep School. I have tutored fellow students as a Peer Consultant at the Washington College Writing Center and as the Graduate Writing Assistant at St John's College. My experience as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Uruguay included leading and participating in writing workshops in both Spanish and English. I have published translations, stories, interviews, essays, and poems, and I'm working now on both shorter and book-length pieces.
