University of Washington Spanish (Other)
Hi! If you are looking for a tutor or teacher to help you with Spanish, I would enjoy helping you work with the language.
I have a post-baccalaureate in Spanish from the University of Washington. Studies abroad in Peru and Guatemala have helped connect grammar with spoken Spanish. I have spent a significant amount of time along the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of Mexico. This has included the ability to live in a home in Yelapa, Mexico this Spring, as well as read to children in Spanish, in the library. I have had the luck to travel to many other Spanish speaking countries, as well. I have Montessori training for Adolescents from Houston Montessori Center, and have taught in both public and private school over the last ten years. My experiences range from 18 month old students to retired, life-long learners. I look forward to meeting you! Hi! We had a wonderful beginning looking at the verbs and at some flash cards. I am so very excited to be working with Sharilyn. She is a wonderful tutor.
Both of our kids said that Sharilyn was great. They are eager to receive more tutoring from her and both said that the time they spent with her was very valuable.
Sharilyn is such a good fit for me. We enjoy working together. She makes learning Spanish FUN for me.
Thank you! It is what I love in my heart. I feel lucky to have stumbled upon a skill I didn't know I had, when I wasn't looking for it, 14 years ago, post college. Becoming bilingual has brought me to some of the greatest places and people I know, and I believe will continue to do so!
Thanks for working so hard with my daughter. She has brought my sophomore daughter's Spanish grade from a C+ to a B+. Thank you.
I highly recommend Sharilyn to anyone seeking a Spanish tutor. I am in my early 50's and have had many teachers and tutors in my lifetime and she is one of the very best. She is an extremely bright and accomplished woman, highly educated with a natural gift and passion for languages, yet she is warm, encouraging, approachable, and friendly. If you work hard, you will progress quickly with her. She uses a variety of teaching tools to keep your interest peaked in the lesson and she is very open to what and how you want to learn---she is great at individualizing the teaching. She has augmented our lessons with various books, including poetry (a passion of mine), Spanish magazines and newspapers, BINGO games when learning the numbers (great fun!), magnetic word games, etc...She has an infectious love of Spanish and has lived in Spanish-speaking countries and is completely fluent. She is very patient, energetic, reliable, fun--laughs and smiles a lot. My one-hour lessons whip by quickly always. I especially like how she works with what YOU want to cover and she is very open to you selecting the materials you're most comfortable with. I have worked with Sharilyn nearly seven months now and couldn't be more pleased. The lessons have added something fun and challenging and enriching to my life, and have broadened my understanding of a culture rich in history, poetry, art, music, and dance--a culture quickly blending with my own.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have Post-baccalaureate certification in Spanish from the University of Washington. I studied at Probigua in Antigua, Guatemala. I studied at Academia Latina in Cuzco, Peru.
I currently promote literacy work in our area locally and in the Americas, with Lux Language Partners.
This year, I am writing quarterly articles for Macaroni kid of Issaquah/Snoqualmie.
