About Christina

I previously taught math and computer software. My background ranges from teaching Algebra to junior high and high students, directing a tutoring center in Bellevue for K-12, to training adults to use the latest computer software. Most of my career, I worked in corporate America teaching internal employees how to use software more efficiently. After becoming a mom, I taught my kids to read, write, and type. I absolutely love teaching people of all ages! In my profession and as a mom, I've found it very rewarding to empower someone with a new skill.

Here's the learning magic I perform: I can change steep learning curves into playground slides. I can make bumpy roads transition into smooth express ways. I can help accomplished adults in three-piece suits leap for joy over deep skill gaps. I can brighten a child's face with exploding confidence. How? I teach with my whole heart and engage your whole mind so I can do learning magic.

I believe in getting your honest feedback so I can tailor my lessons to meet your most pressing needs. I'm flexible with my lesson plans and allow current needs to take priority over scheduled topics. I won't bill for a lesson in which the student or parent is not satisfied with my tutoring.

I can come on short notice. I am flexible with my time, however, I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy. I offer makeup classes if contacted early enough.

I typically meet my students at a library or other quiet, public location. However, I will consider coming to your home or office. I am equipped to deliver lessons online.

Learning is fun, empowering, and the best investment you can make in yourself! Life is learning. I look forward to hearing about your specific learning needs and can't wait to put some learning magic in your day.

I can make every level of math fun, concrete, and embraceable. I can help students with elementary math concepts, number facts. I enjoy teaching pre-algebra, algebra and geometry.

I can unwind a struggling reader and help with reading decoding, reading comprehension, reading fluency. I use various techniques including Wire for Reading. I can teach spelling techniques, writing, grammar and punctuation.

I have over 15 years experience using and teaching Excel. I've taught scientists, business executives, accountants, and Microsoft employees how to master Excel. You can be excellent at Excel with a little learning magic!

Find the fun in learning. Unlock your potential. Drop me a line and tell me your top learning needs and we'll get started. I can't wait to put some learning magic in your day!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Microsoft Access

I have taught Microsoft Access professionally at Catapult Software Training for several years. I've served as the Technical Editor of the Microsoft Step-by-Step training series of books and in particular Access 95. I've used Access 2007 and Access 2010 at work to design dozens of databases each year for various departments while at Nintendo. I can teach database design, in fact, one of my college-level projects in computer science was to design an online course for a new database system. I have since taught many professionals various database software tools such as Access, dBase III, mySQL, Act, and FileMaker. I have years of experience, and can make this topic fun and digestible.

Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel is one of my strong suits. I've used it professionally since 1992 and have worked with the latest version. I not only know the software, I can explain it so my students become familiar with its personality and mode of behavior. Primarily, my students have been working adults or transitioning professionals who needed to claim proficiency in Excel. I loved helping them realize that Excel is an excellent tool that they can master!

Microsoft Outlook

I have used Microsoft Outlook professionally. While at Catapult Software Training, I taught it to hundreds of adults. I was a Microsoft Outlook certified trainer when it was version 2007. While at Nintendo, I served on tier 3 support for questions related to Outlook when the helpdesk could not resolve the customer's problem. I am an expert in Microsoft Outlook. Some of my skills include install, setup, customize, create rules, design macros, custom toolbars, forms, and change themes.
I am very comfortable teaching Outlook (any version).

Microsoft Project

I have used MS Project professionally since 1994 while I managed marketing collateral at Attachmate. I was a certified MS Project user. Later, I became a trainer at Catapult Software Training where I taught MS Project 2007 and 2010. I again used MS Project professionally at Nintendo within the IT Dept. I have taught project management as well. Microsoft Project is a favorite of mine to teach.

Microsoft Windows

I have a Master's Degree in Educational Technology. I've been a Beta Tester for Microsoft and a Technical Writer for their Step-by-Step training series. I've used Microsoft Windows since it's first version. I've taught hundreds of professionals this OS while I worked as an instructor for Catapult Software Training. I currently use Windows 10 and do my own software installation, maintenance, and web design work. I feel very capable of teaching Microsoft Windows.

As a parent of a 4th grade boy who has needing help with reading since age 4, I have read books, attended workshops, and implemented a reading program for him. I have learned the Wired for Reading methods, some Lindamood Bell exercises, and the framework to build fluency. I applied these same techniques to my other son which enabled him to read at two years above grade level. I continue to develop my skills with the Orton Gillingham methods which uses a multi-sensory approach to teaching reading. I also use Reading Horizons and have all the material to teach these programs to elementary age students.

Public Speaking

As a professional trainer, I have delivered training at venues training hundreds of Microsoft employees. I have presented and trained the entire sales force for Nintendo of America for 11 years. My skills as a dynamic, public speaker range from training American Red Cross first aid classes to polished project management fundamentals workshops to pin-striped business professionals.

Web Design

I am self-taught in web design. I have read numerous books on HTML, CSS, webdesign and CMS. I have created a couple websites for private groups. Recently, I created a blog and e-commerce store for a small business. I am familiar with Drupal, AvanteCart and tools such as DreamWeaver, FrontPage. I can do my own layout and graphic work.
