About Laurie

I give the singer practical tools to help develop and train his/her voice to become a stronger instrument. While teaching the basic fundamentals of singing; supportive breathing and healthy vocal technique, any singer can learn to sing better and stronger in any style.

I am trained and knowledgeable to teach all vocal styles including classical, CCM (Contemporary Commercial Music) and Music Theater Belt; all ages, all levels including beginning, intermediate, advocational and professional. I am also able to provide excellent supplemental help for school choir programs and solo competition. In addition, I offer combination beginning voice and piano for those who are undecided and would like to explore both instruments. Home school students are welcome. Group lessons can be arranged.

I acquired my Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance from Wichita State University and have been an Independent Vocal Instructor for 18 years in the Seattle area. I am a member of NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing), and EVFMC (Eastside Vocal Federated Music Club) in Bellevue, Washington. I have 35+ years of performing experience in various styles, ranging from classical to country. My performance background gives me an experiential edge to teaching most styles and genres.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Wichita State University which includes the following areas of study:

-13 years private vocal study (pre and post college).
-6 years piano study (pre and post college).
-4 years study in sight singing, ear training and music theory and choral conducting. Supplemental sight singing and ear training course at the Studio City Music School in Studio City, CA.

I have over 40 years of choral experience.

The curriculum I use to teach sight singing and ear training is from various sources including Joan Frey Boytim's The Private Voice Studio Handbook and Alfred's complete Theory book, which includes note names, note values, major and minor scales, major and minor chord structure, and musical terms. For sight singing and ear training I primarily use solfeggio syllable sheets. In addition, the vocal exercises I use reinforce basic melodic patterns.
