My name is Luis, and I am a Stanford graduate who majored in Symbolic Systems and minored in Mathematics. As a math teacher with more than four years of tutoring experience, I enjoy demystifying math and challenging both my tutees and I to think creatively with the ideas of math. I am a strong believer in every person's potential to understand any idea they want to understand, which is why my tutoring sessions are framed more as dialogues than lectures, where through carefully placed questions and constant encouragement, the student can both answer their math questions and understand the concepts behind them.

Content-wise, I have vast experience with math topics ranging from pre-algebra to calculus. Starting in 6th grade I took the math sequence starting with pre-algebra and culminating with Calculus AB/BC, for which I earned 5's on both AP Exams. After high school, as I learned to tackle higher-level and more abstract math in college, I spent each year either serving as a teacher's assistant in local high school pre-algebra classrooms during the summer, or as a tutor for high school students in subjects such as Algebra 1 and Geometry. Moreover, as a Spanish-English bilingual speaker who engaged with ESL students while in college, I have expertise in tutoring students in either English or Spanish, so language barriers are not a problem for me. Through these experiences I learned how to better diagnose students' misconceptions and help lead them to understanding the concepts they struggle with, something I will continue practicing through these tutoring sessions.

Teaching math is my chosen career, and I am here to show how learning math is both possible and exhilarating. Send me a message, let's talk about your situation, and we can make something work. Thank you for your consideration!

Calculus,

Calculus

As far as calculus is concerned, I took AP Calculus AB and BC in my junior and senior years of high school, respectively, and received a score of 5 on both AP tests.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

As far as the SAT is concerned, I took it back in 2012 and earned a 740 on math, with a total of 2220 for all subjects (back when the SAT was still out of 2400). Moreover, I earned an 800 on the Math Level 2 Subject Test.

Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

As part of the classes I took at Stanford University to earn my degree in Symbolic Systems, I successfully completed a course in Mathematical Foundations of Computing, which included discrete mathematics. A few years later, as part of my preparation to become a high school math teacher, I aced another course that explicitly focused on discrete math. Having seen the material more than once, I am both aware of the mistakes one makes when first learning the material, and ways of better portraying the concepts underlying this area of math.
Finite Math,

Finite Math

To earn my degree in Symbolic Systems from Stanford, I successfully completed a course called Mathematical Foundations of Computing, which had finite math as one of its components. Further, in order to prepare to become a teacher, I later aced a course that focused more explicitly on finite and discrete mathematics. Having seen the material more than once, I am familiar with the mistakes one makes when first learning the material, and how to best frame the concepts underlying this area of math in order to optimize learning.
Logic,

Logic

As a graduate of the Symbolic Systems program at Stanford, I have taken a rigorous logic course sequence starting with basic propositional logic, continuing with First-Order Logic, and culminating with Gödel's Incompleteness Theorems and computability theory. That is, I have expertise not only with the basic concepts and problems of logic classes, but I can explain the greater mathematical contexts in which they exist and apply. Even if this is not something your logic classes are about, I can guarantee you I can answer your questions and leave you with an understanding of how to tackle similar questions in the future.

Awesome tutor with patience

I had several lessons with Luis and he is very helpful on proposition logic and time complexity. I like his approach in teaching and helped me to improve a lot. I would recommend to anyone that want to learn new skills.
