About Deborah

My experience is extensive. I have tutored students at a local Indian Nation and students who were home bound due to illness or other circumstances. I have also privately tutored students during the summer months. As a former classroom teacher, I enjoy learning of all types. I am excited to share my knowledge and to learn more about the students I am tutoring.

I also love the challenge of finding a way that will make sense to the student in order to facilitate a rapid movement of learning, growth, and achievement. Learning about each students' goals and strengths will facilitate the tutoring experience and produce results. I look forward to learning all about the students I tutor in order to better help them along their learning journey.

I have taught 7th and 8th graders mathematics and I am very patient and never give up on anyone who has a desire to learn.

I majored in biology for 2.5 years in college. I love science and if it is beginning biology I am excited to share what I know and find ways to make it meaningful and satisfying to the student.

I am great at beginning Spanish. I took the equivalent of 2 years in college and have 3 years in high school. I have worked with Spanish Speakers for one year.

I am an Engish major and I have a Master's degree in Education. Additionally, I enjoy assisting with; literature, grammar work, English as a Second Language, and writing as well. I look forward to helping students find that excitement for learning that can exist when you are wanting to learn more each and every day and you just can not get enough.

I am ready to help and assist anyone who has the will to learn and the desire to succeed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a Master's Degree in Education and my undergraduate degree is in English and Secondary Education. I have taught high school freshmen English.

GIS

I have worked with teachers and students on the basics of GIS and what is available online with ESRI the standard of the industry in GIS software. Additionally, I have work with crowdsourcing (my term) GIS thought CrowdMap, a free online experience involving GIS for students to become familiar with the concept.

Macintosh

I have worked and owned Macs for over 25 years. Most recently I have taught over 1000 new users to the iPad and iOS the basics. I know the settings, nuances, and cloud computing aspects of the iPad. I am comfortable with Macs as well. I know the native software that ships with the Macs as well as many that are unique to Apple products including; Pages, Keynote, Safari, and many others.

Microsoft Outlook

I have worked with Outlook at my recent jobs that have spanned over 15 years. I also worked with insurance nurses and gave them desktop support for the use of Outlook. I am comfortable with the calendar, the folders, the contacts and sharing aspects of your Outlook Mail program.

Microsoft Publisher

I have utilized the features of MS Publisher in order to assignments for a large format printer at my last job. I do understand the basics and many components about design and how to use Publisher to achieve simple graphics and documents needed for communication.

Photography

I have been a lifelong amateur photographer. I have taken courses in photography and understand the basics of 3-point lighting, depth of field, character and subject shoots, and many more topics and areas of photography. I can analyze photos and help someone build on their experience or create beginning experiences for a newbie to wonderful world of photography.

Religion

In my undergraduate program, we had to take 3 semesters worth of theology topics. Additionally, I served for four years as my local church Sunday School Superintendent. I conducted Bible studies and researched topics and scripture. I have taken courses with professors who were Rabbis, priests, and lay ministers. I am interested in American Religions and their development as well as World Religions and the role they have played in history.

Sewing

I have sewn clothing and craft items since I was in elementary school. I am experienced and familiar with a variety of craft and garment techniques to begin someone on the road to feeling success with sewing. I don't know it all but I am excited and interested in all types of sewing including the creative expression of the arts through textiles.

Social Studies

I taught 5-7 grades for 11 years and this included Social Studies. I am familiar with techniques to pique students' interest in topics that may seem irrelevant to them. I also think reading biographies of folks that lived during times they are studying can help them understand the climate and conditions people may have been living under and allow for empathy from the student and that will equal an interest where there may not have been any before.

Special Needs

I have taught in the classroom for 11 years with special needs students integrated in my classrooms. I am familiar with RTI and other aspects of differentiating instruction and the curriculum to meet the goals and learning requirement of special needs students. I am currently in the high school setting during the school day working closely with a large population of special needs students of all backgrounds. I am a tutor and mentor for a local Native American Tribe.

Experienced Educator and Motivator

It is obvious that Deborah is an experienced educator and motivator. My grandson has upped his game substantially since his first tutoring session with Deborah. Eager to do his homework, books are now his joy, and he looks foward to every session with Deborah. We lucked out and so will everyone else that chooses Deborah for tutoring.
