About Stuart

Whether it's extra help in math or science or you need someone to cover science or math curriculum in your homeschooling program, I'm your tutor. Since 1990, I have worked with students from 1st grade through 12th grade and beyond in math and the physical sciences. I have experience teaching chemistry, physics, Earth Science at the secondary level and geology and physical geography at the college level. I have led science curriculum workshops for elementary and middle school science teachers and I understand where common misconceptions occur and how they create learning barriers down the line. I have developed a number of successful methods that lead to the real and meaningful understanding of concepts. For math, I can help you from elementary math through algebra 2.

I have a proven track record with student achieving success because I'm familiar with many of the deficiencies that lead up to the need for extra help. If you need help increasing your math skills, science literacy or mastering physical or natural science processes and concepts, I will work with you using your own learning construct so that you will understand what you are expected to know. My goal as a teacher/tutor is to help you achieve your goal.

Success comes with training and practice. Do you wonder why some people seem to always run into opportunity and advancement? It often begins with good organizational skills. As a student, your time is a premium. I can help you develop a study program that will help you with your homework and make your preparation time for exams efficient and effective.

Do you have a fear of public speaking? I have 25+ years experience helping people create and present talks on a wide variety of topics in both formal and informal settings. If there' is a specific point you are trying to make in convincing fashion, I can help you deliver a winning presentation.

For those in need of urgent or one or two tutoring sessions for an upcoming exam, I am available but require that you contact me before scheduling more or more tutoring sessions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I've used algebra 1 to solve real-world linear and nonlinear problems. I also teach algebra when teaching science classes.

Algebra 2

I've taught and tutored hundreds of students in applied Algebra and Algebraic reasoning for more than 20 years.

CBEST

I have taken and passed the CBEST. I have taught science at the K-12 level in Oregon and Arizona and at the college level in Oregon, Arizona, Texas and Washington state. I have designed similar tests and taught hundreds of students how to pass this and other types of tests.

Elementary Math

I have B.A. and M.S. degrees in Geology and a M.A. in Teaching with an endorsement in integrated science. Math is essential to succeed in science but it's also true that math is needed to be successful in life. I've worked with hundreds of students on their math skills so they can succeed in school, go to college or vocational school or anything they need strong math skills.

Geology

I have B.A. and M.S. degrees in Geology and I have 25 years working as a geologist and science teacher. I have professional experience in the area of Environmental and Engineering Geology, Hydrology, and Economic Geology. For teaching, my special area of interest is increasing science literacy.

Prealgebra

I've used algebra to solve real-world linear and nonlinear problems. I also teach algebra when teaching science classes and working with students on analytical thinking skills. Taking prealgebra is a great way to prepare for taking algebra.

Public Speaking

In college I was required to take a class in public speaking and in graduate school, I presented research papers, abstracts and posters at professional meetings (Geological Society of America and the Oregon Academy of Science ). As an exploration geologist I routinely gave project tours and presentations to potential investors and when available, spoke at public hearings. As an adjunct faculty member at Tillamook Bay Community College (Oregon); Cochise Community College (Arizona); and professor at San Jancito College (Texas), I was responsible for giving classroom lectures using a variety of media formats. Similarly, while teaching high school science, I lectured to students and spoke at district sponsored science fairs. While in Arizona, I went through the Great Expectations in Math and Science (GEMS) program, became a train-the-trainer instructor and led a number of (GEMS) workshops for science educators. Prior to teaching, I was a member of ProNet (Reno), a non-profit professional networking organization that helps professionals re-enter the job market. While there, I became the co-chair of the education program committee and regularly presented workshops to professionals seeking help with resumes, interviews and cover letters.

Reading

Reading is one of the most important skills you can have. One of my interests is working with students of all ages to help students become effective readers. Need help reading technical material? I can help you. Need to improve your reading speed while retaining critical information? I can help you.

Study Skills

I have a M.A.T. in Education from Western Oregon University. In that program, we specifically dealt with learning methodologies and the respective study skills commonly used. Since graduating from Western Oregon University in 2002, I have incorporated study skills into my curriculum, including but not limited to, using scientific shorthand, drawing, effective note taking, creating concept maps and outlines, and memorization tricks.
