I'm Matt--a theoretical and computational biophysicist with experience teaching and tutoring at the collegiate level. I recently graduated with an MS in Biophysics from Stanford University after completing my undergraduate degree magna cum laude in Chemistry at Rice University. I have been passionate about teaching since my undergraduate education. For me, there are few things more satisfying than helping a student finally "get" a complex topic. Building on this passion, I have sought out as many teaching opportunities as I can over the past few years. I have experience in developing and implementing active learning teaching materials and try to adopt a similar methodology when tutoring by facilitating students directing their own learning as much as possible. I also emphasize acquisition and application of general principles and problem solving techniques over rote memorization. However, I'm flexible in my approach as required by an individual student's learning style and the needs of their particular course.

I have been teaching and tutoring continuously through my time in college and grad school. At Rice, I served as a TA for an organic chemistry lab and was an instructor of record for a class that I developed and taught with a fellow student. During this time, I also tutored several students in general chemistry over two years. I also co-founded and participated in an organization that connected local Rice students with low-income and minority students from across Houston in need of tutoring and academic mentorship.

At Stanford, I served as a TA for six courses in the Department of Chemistry across general chemistry and biochemistry, including one term as Head TA of a biochemistry class. In recognition of my work as a TA, I was awarded Stanford's Centennial Teaching Assistant Award in 2018.

MATLAB,

MATLAB

I have been using MATLAB regularly since 2014. As an undergraduate, I minored in Computational and Applied Mathematics and took several courses in numerical analysis, differential equations, chemical simulation, and scientific computing requiring the use of MATLAB. I have also been regularly using MATLAB in theoretical biophysics research since 2015. I have written MATLAB programs to do everything from implement basic numerical routines to perform chemical and kinetic simulations.

Biochemistry,

Biochemistry

In addition to the work I did in computational biophysics leading to my master's degree, I have two years' experience TAing biochemistry in the Stanford University Department of Chemistry, including one term serving as Head TA. As Head TA, I had a significant role in crafting course content and writing assessments. I was also the member of the teaching team primarily responsible for directing recitations and generating content involving PyMOL, a macromolecular visualization software.

Organic Chemistry

While completing my undergraduate degree in chemistry, I served as a teaching assistant for two semesters of an organic chemistry lab course. I have also tutored several classmates and students in organic chemistry over the past three years. Additionally, I have substantial experience in teaching the organic chemistry of life, having served as a teaching assistant for such a course at Stanford over three terms, including one term as Head TA during which time I was responsible for crafting much of the course content.

Very helpful!

Matt is very knowledgeable and patient - He was available quickly and was a big help with sophomore Chem. He really helped me master material this semester. I will be calling him again for help.

Knowledgable and patient tutor

We went over so many topics and he was very patient when I didn’t understand things. I was able to get a good idea of the things I needed to go over and study. Overall, I understand a lot more

Super helpful!

Gave detailed and helpful explanations for each question, and even went through extra examples. Helped me a lot in preparing for my exam. Awesome tutor, and would definitely seek more help in the future. Thanks Matt!

good Orgo tutor

helped me understand some of the orgo concepts better. We worked through practice problems and he made me more confident on the subject. I plan on getting more help from him in the future.
