Bio

I am Jasper, student of nature and scholar of science. My quest is to figure out how stuff works, and impart that knowledge. For this purpose, I attended a small liberal arts school in a faraway land: New College Of Florida (the honors college of the state system, if you must know). There, I acquired a degree in physics/philosophy, learning the laws of nature in mathematical form and inquiring into our method of discovering them. This made me feel like a kid at the candy shop, except each piece required a serious effort to unwrap—not to mention chewing, digestion, etc. Still, for me, education is the most wonderful game in town; in fact I aspire to become a professor. But doing schoolwork can be extremely hard, at least in my experience, if the system doesn’t deliver its material in a fashion that suits your style. School can feel like a cold hell, when the lectures aren’t clicking and the homework isn’t helping, when a bitter piece of calculus looks like the last thing in the world you want to put in your mouth. But I say thee nay! Calculus is sweet. And sharing this secret is my heart's desire.

I have a knack for teaching, plus expertise in the subjects of science, math, and writing. Beyond the content, I understand academic struggle; I know how to improve one’s ability to study, solve problems, take tests, and generally learn well in academia. Also, I have dealt with ADHD since 3rd grade, so I can help with coping techniques and provide structure for students who share that or other such difficulties. I am quite good at the SAT: my initial score was 2070 (M670+R710+W690), then after studying my final score was 2200 (M770+R720+W710); I can prepare high school students for this, or coach around any sort of test. I served as the editor of my high school newspaper, and a counselor at my summer camp, which taught me to engage people and lead projects. My skills are primed for supporting students in their education. I am at your service.

SAT Math: 770. Courses taken: Calculus I, II, III (derivatives, integrals, multivariable), Linear Algebra, Ordinary Differential Equations. Mastery in: Geometry, Algebra, Trig, Calc.
Mathematician at heart; I love problem-solving, pattern-finding, puzzle-playing. I've learned a lot of math in school, but mostly I've worked through it by myself, because they way it's taught is no fun for me. Math (the set of logical rules) by definition can be taught, but learning to use math (the abstract mental tool) is an inherently individual experience. Like any language, you must be given the vocabulary first, but then you've got to learn to use it in conversation. I can assist in both of these projects; I know all the rules, and I'm handy with the tool. Whatever the problems, I'll help you solve 'em.

Physics was my major; I wrote my senior thesis about the scientific method in the historical development of physics. There is no subject I understand more comprehensively. Advanced courses: Optics, Electricity and Magnetism, Thermodynamics, Classical and Quantum Mechanics.

Please let me know if I can help. My schedule is very flexible, and my commitment is reliable. Cheers!

SAT Math

I took the SAT three times: fall of my senior year I got 2070 without studying; I studied for the spring and scored 2200; then after my gap year I took it again for fun and got 2170. My high score of 2200 was a composite of 770 in math, 720 in reading, and 710 in writing. This is equivalent, in the new 1600-system, to 780M and 740R/W—1510 total. I have since earned a bachelor's degree in physics, honing my math skills further, and written a dozen college essays with impeccable grammar/syntax. The SAT is a puzzle, and I am familiar with the pieces.
