Bio

I'm Tom! I just completed my Ph.D. at Boston College and will start as a professor at Swarthmore College (PA) this Fall. As a graduate student at BC, I have been the sole instructor for six courses including Calculus, Probability, and Statistics, as well as a Teaching Assistant for several others. In that time I twice received the Donald J. White Teaching Excellence award.

One of the primary reasons I chose a career in academia is what I like to call the "ah-ha moments," when a something clicks for a student and the topic at hand suddenly makes sense. I strive to foster these moments through a back and forth discussion of the topic rather than simply explaining how the problem is solved. In short, I love talking about things I understand and find interesting, namely Math and Physics. (And Ultimate Frisbee, but that one is tougher to get paid for.)

Besides six years worth of office hours where I regularly worked with students one on one, I have worked as a tutor off and on for the past 8 years. In that time I have worked with students ranging in age from middle school to college, and proficiency ranging from failing to students at the top of the class looking to make the extra push to get into a top school.

This summer I am preparing two of my papers for publication (on Hyperbolic Geometry), so I have a very flexible schedule. I pride myself in quick responses, please reach out if you are interested!
