I have always loved learning - from skateboarding for the past 22 years, playing hockey and guitar, learning to fix my cars and motorcycles - to more recently applying myself to the more formal environment of college. I dropped out of high school in 11th grade, so I understand the frustration that school can bring, but as an adult I have found much enjoyment in school; perhaps it is that I have made the conscious choice to be there and can now appreciate the challenge that it presents. I pride myself on being able to break difficult problems down into simpler components, and to present them to students in a way that will help them understand, whether it be by using analogies or by using different problems altogether to allow the student to gain the confidence to ultimately solve the problem at hand.

I graduated summa cum laude with a 3.92 GPA in mechanical engineering from Seattle University and am currently nearing completion of my Master's degree at the University of Washington with a current GPA of 3.97. My graduate school focus is on the renewable energy area of mechanical engineering. I have tutored chemistry, physics, math, and introductory engineering courses (statics, dynamics, materials) at the community college level and I have tutored various math courses at the university level over the past 3 years. I love helping students clear the hurdles that they think they are unable to overcome.

Feel free to contact me with any questions. I'd rather you reach out with several questions and decide that we are not a match then to feel like you have wasted your time or money.

GRE

GRE

Having taken the GRE just a few years ago before being admitted into graduate school, I had to become thoroughly familiar with the mathematics involved in this test. Fortunately for me, I was already tutoring students at the community college and university level in all of the math subjects that would appear on the GRE. I understand that many people taking the GRE are not necessarily math or science students and many have problem not taken a math class in many years. Prior to my enrollment into community college in 2012, I had not taken a class since high school in 2001, so I know very well what it is like to have to build your math knowledge up from scratch. All of this being said, I believe I have the requisite skills to help anyone who wants to do well on the math section of the GRE, succeed. I also scored above the 90th percentile on both the verbal and the writing sections of the GRE, so I would be happy to help students in those areas as well.

Computer

MATLAB

MATLAB

I have taken and excelled in several courses either solely focused on MatLab's functionality, or on a particular subject wherein the coursework was heavily dependent on developing further MatLab proficiency. I have years of experience in MatLab coding and debugging with expertise in numerical calculus. I have also used MatLab in the areas of aerodynamics, differential and partial differential equations, linear algebra, etc., with great success.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have tutored Algebra extensively over the past several years in a university setting. I have also used algebra in my studies to further build my expertise in the subject. I have excelled in this subject and enjoy helping others overcome the challenges it presents.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have tutored Algebra 2 extensively over the past several years in a university setting. I have also used algebra in my studies to further build my expertise in the subject. I have excelled in this subject and enjoy helping others overcome the challenges that it presents.
Calculus,

Calculus

I have tutored Calculus extensively over the past several years in a university setting. I have also used calculus regularly in my studies to further build my expertise in the subject. I have excelled in Calculus courses as well as courses in which Calculus is merely a means of problem-solving, and greatly enjoy helping others overcome the challenges it presents.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

I have tutored Chemistry extensively over the past several years in a university setting. I have also used chemistry concepts in my current studies to further build my expertise in the subject. In my experience, students are often overwhelmed by the number of new concepts and math involved in general chemistry courses. My goal is to simplify all of these new ideas and present them to students in a way that reduces their anxiety and allows them to build confidence in both the conceptual aspects as well as the problem solving process involved in chemistry.
Geometry,

Geometry

I have tutored Geometry extensively over the past several years in a university setting. I also used geometry regularly in my current studies to further build my expertise in the subject. Geometry is essential in mathematics and can also be highly intuitive once a student is able to overcome the difficulties that learning any new subject inevitably presents. My goal is to simplify the problem solving process and build this geometric intuition from the ground up so that students feel confident in their geometry courses as well as going forward into more complex mathematics.
Physics,

Physics

I have tutored classical physics at the community college and university level for the past 3 years. I have also taken many, many courses in physics beyond the standard three-tier entry level physics courses in most universities. Physics is one of my favorite subjects to study as well as tutor because it is one of the few subjects that you can very easily help students build a physical intuition for by simply discussing phenomena that we all observe on a daily basis. I have had great success in tutoring students in physics by breaking down difficult problems into simpler parts while building physical intuition alongside mathematical problem solving ability.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I have tutored Prealgebra extensively over the past several years in a university setting. I have also used algebra concepts in my studies to further build my expertise in the subject. I have excelled in this subject and enjoy helping others overcome the challenges it presents. I have had great success in breaking down these early math concepts into very simple components to allow students to feel confident tackling problems as they increase in difficulty.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I have tutored PreCalculus extensively over the past several years in a university setting. I have also used PreCalculus in my studies to further build my expertise in the subject. PreCalculus is an essential building block for calculus and trigonometry, but the elements of PreCalculus are also important in and of themselves. PreCalculus can be a tricky subject for students because it is the point at which math starts to get more abstract and the algebra begins to get more complex. I have had great success in tutoring students in this subject by simplifying the problems that they have into smaller, less complex parts, and building their mathematical intuition from the ground up. I greatly enjoy tutoring this PreCalculus and Trigonometry because of how important and ubiquitous they are in later studies of mathematics.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I have tutored all mathematics subjects that will appear on the SAT extensively over the past several years in university and community college settings. I have also used all of these math subjects heavily in my studies to further build my expertise in the subjects. I have excelled all of these branches of mathematics and enjoy helping others overcome the challenges they present in order to succeed on the SAT.

Differential Equations,

Differential Equations

I have tutored differential equations extensively over the past several years in a university setting. I have also used differential equations in my studies to further build my expertise in the subject. Differential equations is a complex subject, but I believe it can be broken down and taught in a simple way, combining the pieces and allowing the student to overcome the challenges it presents.
Geometry,

Geometry

I have tutored Geometry extensively over the past several years in a university setting. I also used geometry regularly in my current studies to further build my expertise in the subject. My goal is to simplify the problem solving process and build this geometric intuition from the ground up so that students feel confident in their geometry courses as well as going forward into more complex mathematics.
Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

I have tutored Linear Algebra for the past several years at the university level with great success. I have also taken several courses in computational linear algebra as well as calculus, primarily using MatLab software. I believe I can help linear algebra students succeed by simplifying the problems and demystifying the areas of this subject which can often be quite confusing at first, especially to students without any prior experience in abstract mathematics.

Geometry and Algebra

Bruce is a great tutor. His teaching approach works great for my student. He doesn't talk at her. He allows her to explain how much she knows so he knows where to help. She feels more confident about math after just three lessons. I highly recommend him.

Knowledgeable and patient Physics tutor for our daughter

Bruce spent time explaining the concepts of the physics lesson, but more importantly he ensured that our daughter used the concepts, and put it into practice. He is articulate and is a clear communicator. We plan to book additional sessions with him. Highly recommended.
