About Brenda

I wasn't always good at Chinese. We spoke different dialects at home, so Mandarin Chinese was a little hard for me at first. I started learning when I was 3, and then I began attending Chinese school.

I loved the language from the beginning, and I often went home and watched a lot of Chinese dramas. I would pause when I came across a word, phrase, or idiom that I did not know. I would write them down, look them up, and memorize them. My Chinese skills excelled quickly since. I later began representing my Chinese school and participating in a number of regional English-to-Chinese translation competitions and cultural knowledge competitions. After graduating, I returned to my Chinese school as a substitute teacher and tutor for two years.

I have experience tutoring and as a substitute teacher. I have also been a student and have participated in a number of translation competitions.

I have been a career adviser at USC, where I help students figure out what they want to and don't want to do in life, and we identify career paths from there. I help them start the research and discover what they want and how to approach it.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I have attended Chinese school since I was 3. When I graduated, I returned as a tutor and substitute teacher for two years. I have also taken a few higher level Chinese classes (Business Chinese, Modern Chinese IV, Chinese Literature, etc.) in college. I have participated in a number of regional English-to-Chinese translation competitions and won.
