About Mark

I am a semi-retired engineer with 30 years experience, including teaching and mentoring students and engineers at all levels. I teach patiently and thoroughly. Along the way I earned my Ph.D. while working as a research scientist on the technologies that became the Internet we all know and love today. I have a pretty thorough understanding of physics and mathematics. In college and grad school I worked as a tutor in math, and was a teaching assistant for 3 engineering courses. I have experience working with students 1:1 and teaching classes. I enjoy working closely with students to ensure that they have a good understanding of technical material, not only for passing the exams, but to know what's really cool about math and science. I have recent experience tutoring ESL and teach a class for immigrants to prepare for U.S. citizenship.

I have extensive experience with software engineering, satellite communications systems, network topology, internet protocols, and digital signal processing. I have published a couple dozen research papers in journals and conferences. My communications skills, written and spoken have always been excellent, and relatively easy for me. In college and grad school, I studied many courses in science and math, including abstract algebra, differential equations, linear systems, laser physics, quantum mechanics and semiconductor physics.

Please feel free to contact me to talk about how I can help you learn and understand your favorite (!) math and science subjects!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Electrical Engineering

I received 3 degrees in Electrical Engineering, all from Columbia University: BS 1982, MS 1984, Ph.D. 1993, the first two from the School of Engineering & Applied Science, and the Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences at Columbia. For the Ph.D. I passed the qualifying exams that covered extensive knowledge of the undergraduate EE curriculum. While doing my M.S., I was a teaching assistant for 3 EE undergraduate and graduate courses. I enjoyed the teaching experiences, and I believe I'm pretty good at it! Also, while working at Bell Communications Research in the 1990s I supervised a student's work on his Master's thesis from M.I.T.

Probability

I have taken many courses in probability and stochastic processes, and used this theory extensively in my Ph.D. thesis work. I have published research papers using stochastic theory such as Markov Chains, random process modeling, probability distribution modeling, etc.
