About Madison

I have a B.A. in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics, professional experience in government, and radio journalism, and two years of experience as a literacy intervention specialist in public schools, as well as one year of experience in intensive one-on-one private tutoring. I am currently working towards my Master of Teaching at the UW. I bring a variety of resources to my literacy consulting work. These include the Orton Gillingham-style phonics curriculum Project Read, the Explode the Code curriculum, and a wealth of games and activities. In addition, I am able to administer a variety of formal diagnostic assessments including the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Assessment, the QRI reading inventory, phonics screeners, and spelling inventories. I currently hold an instructional internship at the Arbor Heights Elementary School (in West Seattle) in a first grade classroom.

Though I take my work very seriously, I approach each interaction with children and families with joy, optimism, and a commitment to collaboration.

My approach to reading and vocabulary development is grounded in research and theory and is informed by mt extensive work with reluctant and challenged readers including ELL students and students with IEPs.

It gives me great joy to show students and their family how achievable their reading and literacy goals can be. I love working with kids and believe that by trusting, valuing, and studying children we can learn valuable and unique lessons about ourselves.

During my two years of experience as a literacy intervention specialist and one year of private tutoring I implemented over ten distinct reading support curriculum and benefited from instructional coaching from several local and national leaders in the field of phonics instruction.

Please do not hesitate to contact me for any literacy-related tutoring services, including weekly tutoring, diagnostic services, or a coaching consultation to help teach you skills to tutor your own child. So that we can learn about each other and determine if we are a good match, my first 30-minute meet-and-greet session with your family is free!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I worked as a literacy interventionist in an Elementary school for two years between 2014 and 2016. I worked as a literacy consultant and tutor in Jackson Hole, Wyoming during the 2015-2016 school year. I am in my second quarter of a Master in Teaching program at University of Washington.

Phonics

I am in my second quarter of a Master in Teaching program at University of Washington. I own both the Explode the Code and Project Read phonics curriculum. I have been coached in the administration of these by my instructional coach, Fran Lunney.
