About Chris

I have experience as a social worker, a substitute at all grade levels in the Seattle Public School District, and as an elementary teacher.

I taught 3rd grade for 7 years and have a strong grasp of the fundamentals of math, science, and language arts.

I am a lifelong learner and quickly grasp new concepts, and so would also be a great resource in helping with study skills, research projects, organization, and tutoring in areas that I'm not necessarily an expert in.

In high school I passed AP Calculus, and earned college credit towards math. I have an endorsement to teach math in grades 6-12. I am familiar with Everyday Math, Singapore Math, and Math in Focus.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in English from Michigan State University, and have been published. I have taken numerous workshops on teaching reading and writing, and am familiar with the Readers and Writers Workshop curriculum used extensively in Seattle.

I have experience teaching 3rd grade using the Common Core for the last two years.

I worked for three years with the Seattle Public School district on augmenting their curriculum to be in line with the next generation science and engineering standards. I also attended the Physics Institute that's hosted at U-W. This program is geared specifically toward increasing teacher content knowledge in the area of physics.

I love working with students one on one - we can get so much more done without the distractions of a classroom!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I attended a number of trainings geared toward getting educators familiar with Common Core standards. I worked on integrating these into the curriculum in math, reading, writing, social studies, and science.

Most importantly, I understand how they work and know how to apply them after looking up particular concepts or learning targets from the common core website.
