About Emily

I graduated in May 2016 from the University of Idaho, where I completed a BS in Environmental Science and a BA in French. I moved to Seattle in June to experience "city life!"

I do not have formal tutoring experience, but I was always that person in class that people would turn to for answers. I loved answering questions for my classmates and watching them achieve that "a-ha!" moment when a concept finally clicked. I have been considering pursuing a career in education because I love helping people attain their goals, especially in a subject that has proven difficult.

I am willing to work with students of all ages and levels!

I did a Bachelors of Science in Environmental Science, and basic ecology and geology form the basis of this degree. I would feel comfortable tutoring science at the 200 college level or below.

I started studying French when I was in eighth grade and continued all the way through college, earning a BA in French in 2016. I absolutely love French- I talk to my pets in French, read Harry Potter in French, and force my family to sit through subtitled French films. I've only been out of college a few months and the language is the part I miss most. I also studied abroad in France twice for a total of six months.

I got a 35 on the English section of the ACT and also did pretty well in the language portion of the GRE this year. I love to learn new words and analyze their origins to figure out what they mean.

As far as public speaking goes, I love to speak in front of crowds and I believe that it is so important for everyone to have that skill (and especially for younger students, they have to be prepared to give so many presentations in college!).

I would love to chat with you about your tutoring needs and see if we can build a program that will be rewarding and worthwhile for you. My schedule is very flexible!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I achieved a score of 35 on the English section of the ACT.

Ecology

I have a BS in Environmental Science, of which ecology is a major component. Concepts can be explained in visual drawings and diagrams, with different examples that might interest the student.

French

I have a BA in French, grade of A in every French course I took at the University of Idaho. I studied abroad in France in 2010 and Martinique in 2015.

Grammar

I have always been very successful in English classes and writing for any other courses because I have excellent grammar. While learning a second language, French, I developed a very thoughtful and methodical way of thinking about my own native language and why it behaves the way it does.

Literature

Though I haven't read all of the classics, I love literature and reading and pay attention enough to know basic themes of famous books and how to analyze the writing. I would be willing to read any novel at the same time as a student so that we can discuss it together, rather than relying on other materials or memory.
