About Valentine

I graduated summa cum laude with a biochemistry degree from Mount St. Joseph University, followed by a master’s degree in biostatistics from Vanderbilt University. I began teaching after graduating from high school when I volunteered as a teacher in math and sciences to high school students of 9th to 12th grade. During college, I was a peer leader for a freshmen interdisciplinary course, in which I assisted in planning and facilitating class discussions as well as helping the instructor evaluate student’s performance. I also worked as a peer tutor in chemistry, biology, physics and math (precalculus, calculus and statistics) – I collaborated with instructors and other tutors to identify ways to help students better understand challenging class material. The students I tutored expressed how grateful they were for my ability to explain things in a way that was much easier to understand than the instructor’s approach.

I have experience in tutoring biology, chemistry, physics and math, and my current focus is precalculus, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and statistics. Since my master’s degree, I have been working as a research scientist in global health, where my job involves modeling disease burden. On multiple occasions, I have had the opportunity to share and explain challenging statistical concepts to my colleagues who have limited to no statistical background – I try to do this using everyday language, a similar approach I take to tutoring.

In learning, I believe that “practice makes improvement”, and this is the approach I take during tutoring. I emphasize working on many problems and helping students to learn little tricks to solving problems. My goal is to make the tutoring sessions productive and enjoyable, while avoiding overlearning during a single session. I encourage asking questions and deliberate practice, which involves working on all the concepts that the student would like to learn, but focusing on concepts that the student finds more challenging.

I am available for tutoring mainly in the evenings and on the weekends, and in order to plan my schedule accordingly, I request that any cancellations or rescheduling requests be made at least 12 hours prior to the planned meeting time.

For more information about my experience, services and availability, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to being of service to you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
