About Shawn

A recent migrant to Seattle, I'm a freelance photographer and photo editor interested in documenting all aspects of life in the Greater Seattle area. Furthermore, I'd like to take the knowledge I've learned both academically and in the field and help others get into the world of photography.

Most recently I worked in Afghanistan as a video editor for the U.S. and Afghan governments. Prior to Afghanistan I worked for News21 as an Investigative Reporter and Video Producer. At News21, the News21 staff and I worked on an investigative report on the efforts to legalize marijuana across the nation. The report titled “America’s Weed Rush,” was finalist in the 2015 Investigative Reporters and Editors Awards.

I also served as a Combat Photojournalist for the United States Air Force where he documented military and humanitarian operations around the world to include the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I attended the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University with focuses in photography and political science.

My work has been published in The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, and The Chronicle of Higher Education, as well as, on websites for The Weather Channel, Science Daily, Business Insider amongst others.

I have tutored before and I've also trained many young photographers to produce professional quality imagery, to develop technical proficiency and develop an eye for composition. I also find it important to teach people to find their own voice in photography, to be creative and develop their own personal style, to photograph things they enjoy in the way they enjoy.

I love tutoring because I get to help people learn about things that they otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to and because it is enjoyable to give someone the tools to develop their passion.

I have worked with Lightroom for more than 5 years. It has become an essential tool for my work as a photojournalist. I have learned the in's and out's of the program and can show you how to organize and process your imagery.

I have worked with Photoshop for more than 10 years. As a photojournalist and video editor Photoshop is a tool I use everyday. I have taught hundreds of students to the skills to tone, retouch, and process their imagery like professionals.

I played baseball both in High School and for the United States Air Force. I can teach the basic skills and lay the foundation to become a good ball player.

Please contact me to learn more about photography and the tools to make your imagery better. If it's because you want to become a professional photographer, or if you just want to start a new hobby, please give me a call to schedule lessons.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Photography

I worked as a combat photojournalist and photography instructor for the Department of Defense from 2005-2016 and as a freelance photojournalist for the same period of time. I have been published in major publications to include the Boston Globe and The Washington Post. I have a B.S. in Photography from Syracuse University and I'm currently a Master's candidate in S.I.
