About Me:
I recently graduated from the University of Washington's physics PhD program. I have a BA in physics from New College of Florida (2013) and I have a MS degree also in physics from UW (2015). I performed experimental physics research in atomic physics (ask me about it if you're curious!). I am taking some time off from research to tutor full-time until summer 2020.

Teaching Experience:
I was a teaching assistant at New College for courses like introductory physics and calculus. At UW I've been a teaching assistant for various segments of the introductory physics sequence. I had been privately tutoring ~3-4 hrs/week since August 2014 primarily in college physics (UW intro sequence) and high school math. I would estimate that I've spent 1500+ hours teaching students in these settings, and worked with 50+ students in private tutoring. See my course listings for a sample of what I can tutor.

Teaching philosophy:
Conversation is an essential component to learning physics and math. Discussion is more commonly encouraged in non-STEM subjects which gives students formal opportunities to and grow their ideas. However, STEM classes often require the growth to happen internally. In a friendly and nurturing environment, I help students take their original ideas and intuition and mold them into a personal understanding of physics and/or math.

How do I help students mold their ideas? Well... physics and math problems are difficult because they often require multiple skills and ideas to be implemented at once. We usually have a vague sense of what we're supposed to do or know, but of course this vagueness can lead to frustration and anxiety. My goal is to help the student break down the problem into simpler problems so we can isolate the constituent ideas. Then starting from that foundation, we can build to gain an understanding of the larger problem. The idea is to digest each piece of information separately and completely.

Tutor of the century

I’m serious about the review title. I’m taking physics in college and in one session with Katherine she was able to teach me how to solve problems my professor couldn’t explain to me in a week (7 hours of lectures). I like that Katherine doesn’t just explain how the problem is done and move on like a lot of tutors. She gets you involved and engaged in the process comfortably and naturally. I have been using Wyzant for almost 2 years now — I have found no one better.

The absolute best

A lot of tutors on Wyzant are satisfactory and “get the job done.” Few however are spectacular. Katherine’s tutoring style is extremely engaging — you never feel like someone is endlessly talking at you. She stops at key moments to make sure you understand and is very flexible to your learning style. #1 tutor on Wyzant for Calculus

Excellent Tutor

Katherine is an excellent tutor. She has boosted my h.s. daughter's confidence and grades with consistent tutoring in math and physics. In addition, I appreciate that Katherine takes time to provide insightful feedback after each session, so that I have a window into the gaps that have been addressed.

Tutor responded:

Thank you Jenny! :)

Great

Excellent! We really enjoyed the first lesson. The real life examples helped with putting the subject in prospective. Thank you!!

Very helpful tutor

Katherine was very willing both to help me with my exam prep, but also to help me identify where my weaknesses are in question answering.

Great teacher!

Katherine M. is a great teacher! she doesn't just go through and tell you what you need to do, she asks you questions and helps you come to your own conclusions. I have been struggling in Physics and she cleared everything up for me and made me excited to learn physics (which is hard to do)!!! Her explanations and teaching style is awesome!!! I recommend her to anyone in need of help with Physics for sure!
